Re: Renaming of Church Street
A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY
OF SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA, TO HONOR HUMAN RIGHTS ACTIVIST REV.
MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR., BY RE- NAMING CHURCH STREET (SW 59TH
PLACE) BETWEEN SUNSET DRIVE AND SW 62 "d TERRACE, MARTIN
LUTHER KING, JR. BOULEVARD; AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER
TO SUBMIT THIS RESOLUTION TO MIAMI -DADE COUNTY AND TO TAKE
ALL OTHER RELEVANT ACTIONS NECESSARY; PROVIDING FOR AN
EFFECTIVE DATE.
BACKGROUND
The City has been requested by both the Community Relations Board and the Martin Luther
King, Jr. Parade Committee to rename Church Street after the late civil and human rights leader
Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. There is hardly a major community in the Country that does not
have at least one street named in honor of this man who proved to all of America that having a
dream, and working toward its accomplishment, can make a tremendous difference in all of our
lives.
The youth of South Miami, or even the adults, could have no better role model than Dr.
King, and it seems that seeing his name on a daily basis above a street designated in his
honor would act as a constant reminder to keep his ideals and his image in mind as they
go about their daily activities.
RECOMMENDATION
I urge your approval of this resolution.
