Re: Deferral
Residential Parking Permits
REQUEST
A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY
OF SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA DEFERRING LIFTING THE RESIDENTIAL
PARKING PERMITS AND PROVIDING THAT ANY ADDITIONAL STUDY BE
DOCUMENTED IN WRITING AND REFERRED TO THE PARKING
COMMITTEE PRIOR TO ANY CONSIDERATION BY THE CITY
COMMISSION; AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
BACKGROUND AND ANALYSIS
After hearing the comments by a number of South Miami residents at both the July 20th and July
27th Commission meetings, it became clear that the residential parking permits in the areas
bordering the downtown commercial areas is a sensitive issue and one about which those
residents feel strongly. The City has in place a Parking Committee that was formed specifically
to hear and make recommendations upon just that sort of item, taking into consideration the
needs and desires of both specific groups and of the city as a whole. The original trial period for
the permits of six months has already been extended to sixteen months. As this is, apparently,
such an important issue, it seems prudent to further extend the trial period until additional study
can be accomplished and the results submitted to the Parking Committee so that they may make a
solid recommendation to the Commission.
