Re: "Four -Way" Stop Control Installation at
SW 59 Place and SW 64 Street
Dear Ms. Davis:
PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT
SUITE 1610
111 N.W. 1st STREET
MIAMI, FLORIDA 33128 -1970
(305) 375 -2960
Pursuant to your request, please be advised that the Public Works Department's staff conducted a
traffic study to evaluate the need for a Four -Way Stop control at the subject intersection. The study
revealed that the vehicular volume and other operational characteristics at this location do not meet the
criteria for a "Four -Way" Stop control, as stipulated in the nationally recognized Manual on Uniform
Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), published by the U.S. Department of Transportation. Please note
that, in order for a Four -Way Stop control to function effectively, the intersecting streets should have
approximately equal traffic volumes; however, at this intersection the east /west traffic is substantially
higher than north/south traffic, by a 6 to 1 ratio. Therefore, we cannot comply with your request at this
time.
However, we will install Pedestrian Crossing signs at this intersection to face east - westbound traffic, in
order to alert motorists on SW 64 Street of unexpected pedestrian entries into the road. This work will
be accomplished by our Traffic Signals and Signs Division within the next four weeks. Furthermore,
by copy of this letter to Mr. Orlando Martinez, Chief, City of South Miami Police Department, we are
requesting selective enforcement of speed limit at this location.
Should you have any questions or require additional information, please contact me at (305) 375 -2030.
Sincerely,
a
Muhammed M. Hasan, P.E., Chief
Traffic Engineering Division
