This memo is being written in order to address comments that were made at the May 4
City Commission meeting in reference to a proposed adult basketball league at Murray
Park,
About four weeks ago, a gentleman named Johntae Ellis asked the staff at the
Community Center about running a men's basketball league on the outdoor courts at
Murray Park. At the time, Mr. Ellis was not interested in conducting the league indoors,
although it was offered as an option as a way to control the number of spectators that
could potentially show up at the games. We have since begun a men's league in the
gymnasium on Monday and Wednesday nights. Mr. Ellis was asked to detail his
request in writing so that it could be evaluated, and he submitted the attached
information.
Parks and Recreation staff reviewed the information and discussed previous leagues
that the City has operated on the outdoor courts at Murray Park. We informed Mr. Ellis
that, in the best interest of the City, his league would need to meet two requirements.
He would need to provide the City with a certificate of insurance naming the City as an
additional insured, and he would need to provide a minimum of two off-duty City of
South Miami police officers for the games. This information was discussed over the
phone with Mr. Ellis approximately two weeks ago. When he did not contact us again,
we assumed that he was no longer interested in conducting his league.
If you have any further questions, or need additional information concerning this matter,
please do not hesitate to contact me.
