COMMISSION FOR SENIOR CIT
Dear Mayor Feliu:
P' t<
IZENS
The commission has completed the first step in surveying
South Miami seniors and is submitting its findings to you in
this report. In reviewing our initial efforts, I would like
to point out that as of now, there is still considerable
information we don't know about our senior residents. Mean-
while, the data that we have compiled is significant and
will give you and the City Commissioners a profile of our
community's senior citizens.
You will see that we asked 13 demographic questions
and 12 "Need" issues listed on the back page of the attached
survey form. These questions and the Need issues were adapted
from surveys recommended by the Florida Council on Aging.
The responses and the percentages are statisically valid
but are also subject to some interpretation.
Since it is not feasible for the city to address all
of the Need issues at this time, the Commission recommends
that you consider the three highest percentage issues. These
are: Emergency Alert Response - emergency call buttons. 24%
Escorts and transportation for shopping and doctors.25%
Recreation and wellness activities - day trips. 30%
These preliminary findings were obtained from seniors
-2-
during the SOUTH MIAMI SENIOR AWARENESS DAY celebration,
November 15, 2003, at the new Murray Park Multipurpose Center.
A breakdown of the survey that was distributed and answered
is attached for your reference, showing the responses to the
questions and need issues included in the survey.
Also attached are some of the publicity garnered by
the event. Lists of the 30 exhibitors and 55 donors of raffle
gifts and door prizes are included. Altogether it was a
most successful event for the city. The foods contributed
by some of our local restaurants were well received by our
seniors as well as the 150 gift prizes awarded, some with
prices of $100.00..or more.
The COMMISSION FOR SENIOR CITIZENS as you may recall,
was formed in accordance with South Miami ordinance No.13 -01 -1744,
adopted on June 12, 2001, Section f. of the ordinance out-
lines the powers and duties of the Commission which is to
investigate, report and recommend on the following matters
on behalf of the city's senior citizens - age 60 and over.
Health and medical Transporation
Living conditions Employment
Recreation Discrimination
Exposure,to crime Responsiveness of government
General safety Social services
An announcement for new board members was published by

Ms. Pam Stack, the city's victim- citizen's advocate in
March, 2002. One meeting was held by her with the newly re-
cruited members, then there was no activity until March, 2003.
At that time, Mr. Jerald H. Gould reconvened the original
board.
Meeting monthly and sometimes weekly; the board has
initially agreed to focus its efforts on the following:
I) A. Home health services to support senior independence
B. Services to improve the quality of life for seniors
C. Public advocacy - as issues arise - for seniors
II) A. Groups to be served: seniors living in South Miami only
B. Seniors with short -term health problems
C. Frail seniors living independently
III) Life of the Commission: A three year plan will be in place
IV) Funding needs - a three year plan budget is set at
$4.00 per estimated senior citizen.
Based on a 2,310 senior population
the budget would be $9,240.00.
V) Grants from local, state and national organizations,
health systems, government.entities, business and
community groups would be sought for the continuation
of the three year plan.
Please let us know if you have any questions about this report
or if you wish further information, Your recommendations
will be appreciated and welcomed by all members of the board.

Before you fill out this survey please read this background information
The South Miami Commission for Senior Citizens was created by an ordinance of
the Mayor and, the City Commission. The reason for it was a concern for the nearly 25%
of the South Miami population over 60 years of age. While we think that the majority of
the people. are ,in good health and economically self sufficient, we believe there is a
significant number in need of special services. Your anscYe -in this survey will help in
learning how many seniors need the various special services right now.
Remember - all the information you give is confidential: `Please return this
completed survey to the person who gave it to you or mail it to Russell F. Nansen,

First.annual Se nl o
BY B. THACKER
With help from local businesses and
the city commission, the South Miami
Senior Citizens Advisory Committee,
established in 2001 to provide the com-
mission with insight regarding senior
needs, held its first ' annual Senior
Citizens Day on Saturday Nov. -15 at the
Murray Park Multipurpose Center, 5800
SW 66 St.
The event; organized to ben'eft the
nearly 3,500 senior citizens who call
South Miami home, began at l0 a.m., and
provided many of the ;city #errors an
opportunity to voice conce0a'And gather,
information on available 'services and
programs, as well as sample food donat-
ed by area restaurants.
Gerald Gould, chairma n of the advi-
sory committee, said many seniors are
unaware of the programs designed to
assist them, and that by attending events
like Saturday's, they can get a better idea
of what's out there.
Seniors at the event were asked to
anonymously fill out surveys to,better
inform the committee and the city about '
their' desires and needs. Gould said once
the'surveys are collected and ;analyzed,
the commlttee will presentthe'informa-
tion to the city commission 'and they will
work together,to make appropriate dI

"We've gotten a tremendous amount
of help fr6m people in the community,"
said Gould. "The turnout was way
beyond our expectations. ".
Gould credited the success of the
event to the South Miami Homeowners
Association (SMHA) for distributing fly-
ers to every residence in the city, and
Mayor Feliu for helping to raise the funds
necessary to make it happen.
" Mayor Feliu, amidst his campaign for
re- election, said, he attended the. festivi-
ties to show his support for the city's sen-
ior population.
'This is one of the things I've been
fighting for as'Mayor" liksaid:' "I want
to commend Gerald Gould';and- Walfer
Harris and the entire senior citizen -com-
mittee for making the event a reality. The
turnout is phenomenal.." i 3
Gould said he and the rest of the com-
mittee were, pleased with the event
beyond their expectations, and that they
intend to hold a second event next year.
