Re: Point of Distribution for Disaster
Relief Supplies
A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA, SUPPORTING AND ENCOURAGING MIAMI -DADE
COUNTY TO PROVIDE A POINT OF DISTRIBUTION FOR DISASTER RELIEF
SUPPLIES WITHIN THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI, PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE
DATE.
BACKGROUND AND ANALYSIS
We learned from the tropical storm events of this year that after a hurricane, massive
amounts of supplies such as food, water and ice become available through the efforts of
the State and Federal governments. Miami -Dade County is responsible for determining
the locations for distributing these resources. In selecting specific sites for the "Points
Of Distribution° (POD), the County considers many factors including input from
municipal governments concerning the specific, needs of a particular community.
The number of senior citizens and low income residents in our City who rely on public
transportation is indicative of a community that is in need of a "POD" that is more
localized than what was provided during storm events in 2005.
This Resolution is the impetus for the City to take steps to obtain the cooperation of the
County in securing a POD site within the City limits of South Miami
RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that the City Commission authorize the City Manager to negotiate
with Miami -Dade County for a point of distribution site within the City limits of South
Miami.
