AN ORDINANCE OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA ESTABLISHING GUIDELINES FOR NAMING CITY
PROPERTY AND ROADWAYS WITHIN THE CITY; PROVIDING FOR
SEVERABILITY; PROVIDING FOR ORDINANCES IN CONFLICT; AND PROVIDING
AN EFFECTIVE DATE
FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION:
Commissioner Sherar requested the attached ordinance in order to set specific criteria for the
naming of streets and other public property within the City of South Miami. His suggested
criteria include that:
No public street or piece of public property shall be named for a person unless and until that
person has been deceased for at least fifty years.
"The attachment of any organizational name or likeness to any piece of public property within
the City of South Miami shall not be entertained unless a contribution in money and /or other
goods and considerations totaling at least ten percent (10 %) of the value of that property has been
made to the City."
The proposed ordinance also states that these requirements may only be waived by a unanimous
vote of the City Commission.
