BACKGROUND AND ANALYSIS Florida State Statutes (Chapter 23) authorize the governing bodies of municipalities to empower the Chief Executive Officer of the municipality to enter into agreements for shared law enforcement services in specific times of need. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the agency statutorily charged with the administration of mutual aid within the state, recommends as a matter of course that these agreements should be renewed every five years.
