A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA, JOINING THE DADE COUNTY ASSOCIATION OF CHIEFS OF POLICE TO SUPPORT THE ADOPTION BY CONGRESS OF AN EFFECTIVE AND COMPREHENSIVE ASSAULT WEAPONS BAN; AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, the Dade County Association of Chiefs of Police is committed to enhancing the quality of life and safety of the people who live, work and play in Miami -Dade County; and WHEREAS, the Miami -Dade police administrators recognize that there is no legitimate sporting or hunting purpose for certain semi - automatic, military -style assault weapons; and WHEREAS, the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act passed by Congress in 1994, included provisions making it a federal crime for an individual to possess or transfer assault weapons manufactured after that date; and WHEREAS, the aforementioned ban expired on September 13, 2004; and WHEREAS, all of the weapons previously banned under the law can now be produced and distributed throughout our communities; and WHEREAS, Miami -Dade law enforcement officers and other public safety officials recognize the danger that these previously banned weapons pose to our officers and community; and WHEREAS, the Dade County Association of Chiefs of Police acknowledges that the aforementioned Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act could be improved. NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section l: That the City Commission hereby joins the Dade County Association of Chiefs of Police to support the adoption by congress of an effective and comprehensive assault weapons ban. Section 2.: That this resolution shall take effect immediately upon approval. PASSED AND ADOPTED this 3`a day of May, 2005.
