MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR., BY CO- DESIGNATING CHURCH STREET (SW 59TH PLACE) BETWEEN SUNSET DRIVE AND SW 62nd TERRACE, MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. BOULEVARD; AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO SUBMIT THIS RESOLUTION TO MIAMI -DADE COUNTY AND TO TAKE ALL OTHER RELEVANT ACTIONS NECESSARY; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. BACKGROUND The City has been requested by both the Community Relations Board and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade Committee to name Church Street after the late civil and human rights leader Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. The usual county procedure, we have been informed, is to co- designate street names so that residents who live on the street do not have to file a change of address form with the post office. As stated in the memo for the previous resolution passed by this Commission, there is hardly a major community in the Country that does not have at least one street named in honor of this man who proved to all of America that having a dream, and working toward its accomplishment, can make a tremendous difference in all of our lives. The youth of South Miami, or even the adults, could have no better role model than Dr. King, and seeing his name on a daily basis above a street co- designated in his honor would act as a constant reminder to keep his ideals and his image in mind as they go about their daily activities. A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA, TO HONOR HUMAN RIGHTS ACTIVIST REV. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR., BY CO- DESIGNATING CHURCH STREET (SW 59TH PLACE) BETWEEN SUNSET DRIVE AND SW 62 °d TERRACE, MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. BOULEVARD; AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO SUBMIT THIS RESOLUTION TO MIAMI -DADE COUNTY AND TO TAKE ALL OTHER RELEVANT ACTIONS NECESSARY; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, it is the desire of the Mayor and Commission of the City of South Miami to honor the memory of one of our country's most influential civil and human rights activists; and WHEREAS, the works and the ideals of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. live on and continue to set a prime example of the difference one man can make in the setting and achievement of goals for the public good; and WHEREAS, the City of South Miami should follow the example set by other communities who have co- designated a public street to honor this moral leader and outstanding human being. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA, THAT; Section L SW 59t" Place, presently known as Church Street, shall, as soon as authorized by Miami -Dade County, also be known in and by the City of South Miami as Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard, and signs shall be made and placed above the present street declaring that co- designation. Section 2. The City Manager is hereby authorized to submit this resolution to Miami -Dade County and /or to take any other actions necessary to secure the authorization of this honorary co- designation and to proceed with the installation of new signs Section 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon approval. PASSED AND ADOPTED this day of , 2005.
