Re: Rescinding Resolution
No.: 199 -04 -11978
A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SOUTH
MIAMI, FLORIDA, RESCINDING RESOLUTION No. 199 -04 -11978 RE- NAMING CHURCH
STREET (SW 59TH PLACE) BETWEEN SUNSET DRIVE AND SW 62N TERRACE,
MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. BOULEVARD; AND TO TAKE ALL OTHER RELEVANT
ACTIONS NECESSARY; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE
BACKGROUND:
Miami -Dade County staff has requested that the City consider co- designating Church Street as
Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard instead of re- naming the street. The County staff explained
that co- designating streets is their standard process because when a street is renamed, all
residents along the street are required to submit a change of address to the Post Office. Normally,
residents do not appreciate this inconvenience associated with re- naming of a street. The co-
designating process does not require any address change.
As a result, it is recommended that the City Commission rescind resolution number 199 -04-
11978 and honor the Community Relations Board and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade
Committee's request by co- designating Church Street after the late civil and human rights leader
Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.
RECOMMENDATION:
I urge your approval of this resolution.
