06-12-07 Pedestrian OV at University Metrorail StationsPedestrian Overpasses
at
South Miami and University Metrorail Stations
PROJECT FACT SHEET
Prepared by: H.J. Ross Date: June 05, 2007
• Studies have been performed by Miami Dade Transit (MDT) and its consultants,
which determined that pedestrian bridges were necessary to be constructed at both
the South Miami and University Metrorail Stations, to permit pedestrian safe
crossing of US 1 at these stations.
• A consulting engineering firm (PBS &J) was previously contracted by MDT to
carry out preliminary studies and arrive at a recommended alternative for the final
design. Three alternative designs were evaluated for the Pedestrian Bridge at
University Station and seven alternative designs were evaluated for the Pedestrian
Bridge at South Miami Station.
• The consultant recommended one alternative for each site and these were
reviewed and approved by all the pertinent agencies.
South Miami Station
• The pedestrian overpass will be a low profile pedestrian bridge structure
with vertical circulation towers located at the corner of Sunset Drive and
South Dixie Highway /U.S. -1 and between the Metrorail guideway and the
South Dixie Highway/U.S. -1.
• The total estimated project budget for the South Miami Pedestrian
Overpass is $6,213,000. The construction cost is estimated at $3,835,000
and right -of -way costs estimated at $1,523,000.
• The Conceptual Study was completed on March 115, 2006.
• The Environmental Document (Categorical Exclusion) has been
completed for an overpass at this location and approved by the Federal
Transit Administration (FTA).
University Station
• The pedestrian overpass will be a low profile pedestrian bridge structure
with vertical circulation towers located at the southwest corner of
Mariposa Court and South Dixie Highway /U.S. -1 and between the
Metrorail guideway and South Dixie Highway /U.S. -1.

• The total estimated project budget for the University Pedestrian Overpass
is $5,430,000. The construction cost is estimated at $3,211,000 and right -
of way costs estimated at $1,523,000.
• The Environmental Document (Categorical Exclusion), for the overpass
over US -1 at the University Metrorail Station, has been completed and
was sent to FTA on April 20, 2006 for approval. Such approval will
qualify for the application. of federal funding.
• The Conceptual Study was completed on March 15, 2006.
H J Ross was contracted by MDT to prepare the final design of these two
approved concepts
• H J Ross started the final design for these bridges on April 20, 2007 and
the Final Submittal is scheduled for completion Spring, 2008.
Construction is expected to be completed in 2010.
• The South Miami Station will have a Mediterranean look to follow the
local architectural surroundings, whereas the University Station will be
designed following a more modern style, as per the adjacent areas.
• After this Initial Concept Refinement presentation to TARC, there will be
another presentation to TARC at the 60% submittal. Various Public
Meetings will also take place.
• MDT along its consultant: (HJ Ross) will coordinate individual meetings
with municipalities, i.e. City of Coral Gables and City of South Miami,
and possibly District County Commissioner(s). These meetings will be
with municipal staff or elected officials. During the concept refinement,
two (2) public meetings will be conducted; one for each bridge (4
meetings total) to present ;information to the general public.
