Request: A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA, MEMORIALIZING DR. MARTIN
LUTHER KING, JR.'S LEGACY AND CONTRIBUTION TO THE SOCIETY
WITH A SCULPTURE PLAQUE ON MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.
BOULEVARD IN THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI; PROVIDING FOR AN
EFFECTIVE DATE
Request: To install Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.. Memorial plaque at Martin Luther King
Jr. Boulevard at SW 67th Street
Reason/Need: On March 10th 2005, the City Commission co- designated SW 59th
Place (Church Street) as Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to honor
the life and contributions of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. As America's
greatest champion of racial justice and equality, Dr. King served as
a leader who not only dreamed of a color -blind society, but who
also led a movement that achieved historic reforms to help make it
a reality. In the spirit of celebrating Dr: Martin Luther King, Jr.'s
legacy and educating our youth, a sculpture plaque is proposed on
Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard at SW 67, th Street. The sculptured
plaque and post will be installed as part of the already approved
funding for the ongoing reconstruction of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Boulevard.

A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA, MEMORIALIZING DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.'S
LEGACY AND CONTRIBUTION TO THE SOCIETY WITH A SCULPTURE
PLAQUE ON MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. BOULEVARD IN THE CITY OF
SOUTH MIAMI; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE
WHEREAS, a street co- designated for Martin Luther King Jr. honors the life and
contributions of America's greatest champion of racial justice `and equality, the leader who not
only dreamed of a color -blind society, but who . also led a movement that achieved historic
reforms to help make it a reality; and,
WHEREAS, it is only appropriate to remember Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s legacy with a
sculpture plaque on Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard; and,
WHEREAS, the City Commission is recognizing Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s life and
contribution with sculpture plaque to be installed along Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard at SW
67th Street.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR "AND CITY COMMISSION OF
THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA;
Section 1. That the City Commission is recognizing Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s life
and contribution with sculpture plaque to be installed along Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard at
SW 67th Street.
Section 2. That staff is asked to install Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial plaque at
Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard at SW 67th Street.
Section 3. That this resolution shall take effect limmediately upon approval.

A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA, TO HONOR HUMAN RIGHTS ACTIVIST REV.
MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR., BY CO- DESIGNATING CHURCH STREET (SW 597H
PLACE) BETWEEN SUNSET DRIVE AND SW 62ND TERRACE,.MARTIN LUTHER
KING, JR. BOULEVARD; AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO SUBMIT
THIS RESOLUTION TO MIAMI -DADE COUNTY AND TO TAKE ALL OTHER
RELEVANT NECESSARY ACTIONS; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, it is the desire of the Mayor and Commission of the City of South Miami to
honor the memory of one our country's most influential civil and human rights activists;
and
WHEREAS, the works and the ideals of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. live on and
continue to set a prime example of the difference one man can make in the setting and
achievement of goals for the public good; and
WHEREAS, the City of South Miami should follow the example set by other
communities who have designated a public street to honor. t11is moral leader and
outstanding human being.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE, MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA, that:
Section l: SW 59`h Place, presently know as Church Street; shall; as soon as authorized
by Miami Dade County, be known in and by the City of Miami as Martin Luther King, Jr.
Boulevard, and signs shall be made and placed above the present street declaring that
designation and to proceed with the installation of new signs.
Section 2: This resolution shall be effective immediately upon approval.
