APPLICANT'S REQUEST The applicant is requesting a Certificate of Appropriateness for the exterior renovation of a vacant store and the placement of new business signage on a designated historic site at 5904 Sunset Drive (Amster Properties / Dorn Brothers Building). The historic designation consists of three buildings; the subject COA request is for one of the buildings. PROPOSED RENOVATION - - The applicant is proposing to pressure clean and repaint the existing facades on a vacant store which faces.both Sunset Dr/ S. Dixie Highway and an interior courtyard facing Dorn Avenue. The proposed renovation will re- create a Mediterranean theme for the building. In addition the applicant is proposing to place an oval shaped name sign on both facades. The sign will be Plexiglas with raised lettering and will be 15 square feet which is within the size limitation of a wall sign. HISTORIC BOARD ACTION The Historic Preservation Board reviewed the applicant's proposed renovation and signage at its April 21, 2008 meeting. The Historic Preservation Board made several suggestions to the applicant concerning signage and colors and pressure cleaning. The Board then adopted a motion by. a vote. of 7 ayes 0 nays recommending approval of the requested Certificate of Appropriateness with the following conditions: 1. The yellow color scheme shall be used for the exterior painting; 2. The rear of the building shall have vent tiles installed in order to create a more symmetrical alignment above the rear door; 3. The sign shall be consistent with the elevations as presented; 4. The sign shall be flat with direct lighting; 5. The building shall be pressure cleaned at 500 psi. DESIGNATION REPORT (Amster Properties / Dorn Brothers Buildings) Design- Review Guidelines- ' The Historic Preservation Board shall adopt and may, from time to time, amend the standards by which applications for a Certificate of Appropriateness may be evaluated. In adopting these guidelines, it shall be the intent of the Board to promote maintenance, restoration, adaptive uses appropriate to the property, and compatible contemporary designs that are harmonious with the exterior architectural and landscape features of neighboring buildings, sites, and streetscapes. In order to assist in the review process for the Amster Properties / Dorn Brothers Building (5904 Sunset Dr.), the following design guidelines should be consulted. The Board is being given the opportunityto suggest a color to be used in the repainting. The applicant demonstrates a color selection pallet on p.1 of the submitted illustrated plans.. It is recommended that the COA application, as submitted be approved. The exterior paint will be Benjamin Moore Historical colors. The shades will be Bryant Gold (HC -7), Waterbury Cream (HC -31) and Montgomery White (HC -33) as illustrated during meeting. Also, as agreed the pressure cleaning performed prior to applying paint, will be between 200 and 500 psi as per Preservation Brief No. 6 from the National Parks Service.
