RESOLUTION NO.
A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI, RELATING TO RESPECTFULLY REQUESTING
THAT THE FLORIDA LEAGUE OF CITIES AND NEIGHBORING
COMMUNITIES ISSUE A RESOLUTION REQUESTING THAT THE
GOVERNOR CALL A SPECIAL SESSION OF THE FLORIDA
LEGISLATURE FOR THE SPECIFIC PURPOSE OF ADDRESSING THE
STATE'S PUBLIC EDUCATION BUDGET DEFICIT; PROVIDING AN
EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, the Miami - Dade's School Board has undertaken the arduous task of
developing cost savings measures to reduce the $284 million budget deficit; and,
WHEREAS, The Mayor and City Commission believe that funding for educational
programs and services should be expanded and not reduced, despite the state -wide budget
deficit; and,
WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Commission respectfully request that Miami -Dade County
League of Cities and neighboring communities pass a Resolution in support of a special session for
the specific purpose of addressing the budget deficit without reducing educational programming
and services.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI, AS FOLLOWS:

26 Section 1. The foregoing recitals are incorporated by reference and affirm that the
27 above recitals are true and correct.
28 Section 2. The Mayor and City Commission respectfully request that, as a matter of
29 good government, the Florida League of Cities and neighboring communities issue a resolution in

1 support of the State Legislature holding a special session for the specific purpose of addressing the
2 budget deficit and to modify the policy relating to reducing State public educational programming
3 and services.
4 Section 3. That this resolution be forwarded to the Governing Board of the Florida
5 League of Cities, the Florida Legislature, and the individual members of the Florida League of
6 Cities.
7 Section 4. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon approval.
