10-06-09 Item Add-On 1ph ew RESOLUTION NO. 2 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA; 3 URGING GOVERNOR CRIST AND THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT 4 OF TRANSPORTATION SECRETARY KOPELOUSOS TO 5 PRIORITIZE THE MIAMI - ORLANDO HIGH -SPEED RAIL 6 PROJECT AS PART OF THE FEDERAL ECONOMIC STIMULUS 7 PACKAGE FOR THE STATE OF FLORIDA; PROVIDING FOR AN 8 EFFECTIVE DATE. 9 WHEREAS, the City of South Miami already has the required connecting public 10 transportation system - the newly completed Miami Intermodal Center next to the Miami 11 International Airport; and 12 WHEREAS, a Miami- Orlando route has the potential for greater ridership than a 13 Tampa - Orlando route; and 14 WHEREAS, improved mobility is highly desired in the City of South Miami, 15 Miami -Dade County and throughout the State of Florida; and 16 WHEREAS, the Federal Government is seeking appropriate projects for inclusion 17 in the Federal economic stimulus package to provide immediate and near -term job 1.8 opportunities for projects; and 19 WHEREAS, the Miami- Orlando high -speed rail project is an appropriate project 20 for inclusion by the State of Florida in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan; 21 and 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 30 31 32 33 34 35 36 37 38 39 NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1: That the above whereas clauses are adopted as set forth herein. Section.'2: That the City Commission of the City of South Miami goes on record requesting Governor Crist and Florida Department of Transportation Secretary Kopelousos prioritize the Miami - Orlando high -speed rail project as part of the Federal Economic Stimulus Package for the State of Florida. Section 3: A copy of this resolution shall be sent to the Governor of the State of Florida, Florida Department of Transportation Secretary Kopelousos, the Miami -Dade County Legislative Delegation and other members of the Florida Legislature.
