APPLICANT'S REQUEST:
The applicant is requesting approval from the Environmental Review and Preservation
Board (ERPB), to install one illuminated flat sign for the City of South Miami, Police
Department, at the above referenced address.
STAFF ANALISYS:
The proposed exterior signage is located in the "TODD-PI" Transit Oriented
Development District - Public Institutional. Pursuant to Section 20-4.3(1)(5) [All Other
Zoning Districts], of the Land Development Code (LDC), signage is permitted as follows:
FLAT SIGNS with a total aggregate sign area, not to exceed (20) percent of the
area of any building face; for the purpose of sign regulation, there shall be
considered to be only four (4) facades to any building; no single sign shall
exceed two hundred (200) square feet in area. Direct illumination is permitted.
The intent of this proposed wall sign is to clearly identify the location of the City of South
Miami Police Department within the City Hall building complex. Currently, the site and
the building placement are somewhat confusing to visitors to the Department. The
Police Department's front entrance faces South Dixie Highway (US1) and the Metro
Rail, which results in no identification of the Department and the rear of the facility faces
the parking lot. Access to the municipal complex is off Sunset Drive and 61 Court.
Therefore, in order provide visibility to the Police Department, a sign visible from Sunset
Drive would'be adequate. Please refer to the attached Survey of the subject property,
Authorization Letter from City Manager and Letter of Intent from Chief of Police, for
additional information.

The applicant is requesting approval for the installation of one (1) LED illuminated flat
cabinet face type sign. The sign will be installed on the north facade at the rear of the
Police Department, which is also adjacent to the parking area. Attached photographs
illustrate views from Sunset Drive to the proposed location where the sign will be
installed.
The proposed illuminated sign has an overall size of sixty-four (64) inches in width by
seventy-two (72) inches in height, which equals a total of 31.98 square feet in area. The
sign as proposed does not exceed the twenty percent of approximately allowable area
(90 square feet). Additionally, the sign does not exceed two hundred square feet;
therefore this proposal complies with the regulations listed above for flat signs.
At this time, the applicant seeks signage approval for one (1) LED illuminated sign from
the ERPB.
RECOMMENDATION: Approval with the following conditions:
1) No exposed conduits nor wiring,
2) Any additional signage will require a separate application for review by
the ERPB; and,
3) Any comments and concerns by the Board.

Chris, first 1 want to personally thank you for assisting the police departnleilt in this important prgiect.
The City of South Miami Police physical layout fails to provide adequate signage and/or clear
identi fical ion of the location of the police station within the City Hall structure.
As you aware the fi-ont entrance of(lie police department faces US I and the rear of the station faces city
halls parking area. We are proposing to purchase and install an illuminated sign which will display our
police departments patch on the building structure adjacent to our gas pumps (see picture attached). T'he
proposed sign will face,- our parking lot and will be clearly seen from Sunset Drive, providing easy
visibility and swift recognition to otir police department.
Note: The sign will not affect any residential area, since it will face our pai-king lot and the businesses
alongside 61 count SW.
We feel that the signage will easily assist anyone in finding our station.
