"I had some knowledge of i what was going on before I [ accepted the position. I basi- 1 cally am in Coral Gables a lot. I read the paper, Pounds said, adding that Benedit has been a model employee and I helpful in the transition. "He's excellent. He does a great job. I can't really address things that have been done in the past." Pounds said he applied for the procurement job and not the city manager position because the bulk of his expe- rience was purchasing and finance related. "I felt that was a good fit for me because of my skill set," said Pounds, who estab- lished.a central purchasing system in Glendale. "I'm very impressed with the city of Coral Gables," he said. "It's a very beautiful community. It has much to offer from the standpoint of quality of life and has--an excellent reputation. It is a city that provides many ser- vices and is basically a stand alone. city and all that appealed to me." Pounds appealed to interim City Manager Maria Alberro Jimenez, who said she thought he would move up in the city administration. "He started out in pro- curement went up the ladder to become 'a city manager and hold that position for 20 years," Jimenez said.. "He's a good guy and I.think he's going to work well with that group over there [in pro- curement]." Pounds came to South Florida for love: He had a long distance relationship with a Miami woman he mar- ried last year. His wife: Isabel Vals, is an attorney at the law firm of Adorno and Yoss — the firm where the former Gables city manager's attorney also works. Jimenez said she didn't know that when Pounds was hired. "He said that he would look into it," Benedit said, adding that he felt comfort- able working with Pounds. "I'm still litigating against the city because I consider his hiring retaliation, but I don't have a problem work- ing with him," Benedit said, adding it was actually A relief to have another set of eyes looking at the city's bidding and contracting process. "Now I don't have that responsibility anymore. Basi- cally,' I. will advise him of -what I think are misproprie- ties, but he will have to make the final decision." Pounds — who will make $90,000 a year, less than the $110,000 offered to Carolan — was probably warned about Benedit beforehand, according to an e-mail from him to Adler sent in Novem- ber thanking her for the interview., "I also wanted to reiterate something that I mentioned during the interview in regard to dealing with diffi- cult situations involving employees," Pounds wrote. "It goes with the territory with the work that I did as a city administrator to deal with difficult employees and citizens.
