END OF MEMORANDUM City of South Miami Police Department INTER - OFFICE MEMORANDUM TO: Mr. Ajibola Balogun City Manager FROM: Chief Robert F. Richardson II DATE: January 30, 2009 SUBJECT: Traffic Concerns (5900 Block of 60 Ave) On Thursday, January 22, 2009, myself, Vice Mayor Brian Beasley, City Manager Ajibola Balogun, Assistant Public Works Director Rudy de la Torre and Engineering Operation Manager Jose Olivo, all met with a concerned resident regarding vehicles speeding in the 5900 block of SW 60 avenue during peak times(0700 -0900 and 1630- 1715 hours) of the day. In an effort to remedy this problem, I have directed uniform patrol officers to conduct a study of vehicles speeding along this corridor and take appropriate action based on the speed of the vehicles. While at the location, it was observed that the roadway has extensive curves on both ends of the street with no signage directing drivers to be cautious of the upcoming curves. It appears that the existing signs may have blown down and /or away due to past hurricanes over the years and have never been replaced. This signage would certainly have an impact on drivers speeding through the neighborhood. Effective Friday, January 23, 2009, (the following day) a one and a half month study will be conducted monitoring the speed, via radar laser on a daily basis. Additionally, a request to the county for the replacement signs will be made. A supplement memorandum will be authored outlining the outcome of this enforcement effort.
