04-21-09 Item 28I RESOLUTION NO. 2 3 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF 4 THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA RECOGNIZING 5 FORMER MAYOR CATHY MCCANN AS AN EXEMPLARY 6 COMMUNITY ACTIVIST; AND PROVIDING FOR AN 7 EFFECTIVE DATE. 8 9 WHEREAS, Ms. McCann has been an active public servant in the City of South 10 Miami since 1960; and 11 12 WHEREAS, Ms. McCann was the first woman elected Mayor, in the City of 13 South Miami, honorably serving as Mayor, Vice Mayor and Commissioner during the 14 period of 1976 to 1994; and 15 16 WHEREAS, Ms. McCann is a great visionary and tirelessly carried the torch for 17 affordable housing - responsible development in South Miami and served on the Budget 18 and Finance, and the Charter Review Committees; and 19 20 WHEREAS, Ms. McCann is very knowledgeable and familiar with the City's Charter; 21 and 22 23 WHEREAS, Ms. McCann served as president of the Board of Directors of Habitat for 24 Humanity from 2000 through 2002 and again in 2005, and is presently serving her second term as 25 one of the Board of Directors for the 2008 -2010 term; and 26 27 WHEREAS, Ms. McCann was instrumental in the construction of the first Habitat for 28 Humanity house in South Miami; and 29 30 WHEREAS, Ms. McCann was responsible for initiating the Martin Luther King Jr. 31 Annual Parade in South Miami; and 32 33 WHEREAS, Ms. McCann is a member of the Board of Directors of the First United 34 Methodist Church of South Miami; and 35 36 WHEREAS, Ms. McCann has earned the respect of other civic leaders and the affection of 37 a host of area residents who are proud to call her "friend "; and, 38 39 WHEREAS, the South Miami City commission desire to co -name SW 87th Street, from 40 SW 58th Avenue to SW 601h Avenue as "Cathy McCann Street "; and, 41 42 NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY 43 COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA: 44 45 Section 1. That SW 87th Street, (from SW 58th Avenue to SW 60th Avenue) be 46 officially co -named "Cathy McCann Street." 47 48 Section 2. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon approval.
