A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE OTY OF SOUTH MIAMI,
FLORIDA, APPROVING THE NAMING OF CITY
PROPERTY, SPECIFICALLY THE GYMNASIUM AT THE
GIBSON-BETHEL COMMUNITY CENTER LOCATED AT
5800 SW 66TH STREET POSTHUMOUSLY IN HONOR OF
AND AFTER COMMISSIONER LUIS GIL; PROVIDING
FOR IMPLEMENTATION, CORRECTIONS, AND AN
EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, the City Commission desires to name the gymnasium located at the Gibson-
Bethel Community Center located at 5800 SW 66 th Street (the "Gymnasium") in honor of and after
Commissioner Luis Gil and host an event in the near future to honor Commissioner Gil; and
WHEREAS, Commissioner Gil served as a Commissioner from 2018 to 2022, and
championed many causes to enhance the lives of City residents, chief among them park
improvements, development of affordable and workforce housing, and promoting transit and
mobility solutions; and
WHEREAS, Commissioner Gil ably represented the City as its representative to the
Miami-Dade County League of Cities and, prior to serving on the Commission, served the City as
a member of various City boards for several years; and
WHEREAS, Commissioner Gil has been a City resident since 2002 where he lives with
his wife and daughter, and continues as an active presence at community events and at the Gibson-
Bethel Community Center; and
WHEREAS, in addition to his family responsibilities and all of his civic work,
Commissioner Gil has an accomplished career as a solution-focused IT manager with a
background in data systems, implementation of innovative systems and procedures, and end-user
training; and
WHEREAS, Section 17-10.1 "Guidelines for Naming City Property and Roadways"
allows for the naming of City property provided that the person being honored is done so
posthumously; and
WHEREAS, the City Commission desires to honor Commissioner Gil posthumously and
name the Gymnasium in honor of and after Commissioner Gil, to take effect upon his passing, and
finds such honor to be in the best interests of the City; and
WHEREAS, the City Commission finds that this Resolution is in the best interest and
welfare of the City.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA, AS FOLLOWS:

Section 1. Recitals. The above-stated recitals are true and correct and are incorporated
herein by this reference.
Section 2. Approving the Naming of the Gymnasium in Honor of Commissioner
Luis Gil. The City Commission hereby approves the naming of the Gymnasium in honor of and
after Commissioner Luis Gil, with such naming to become effective upon Commissioner Gil 's
passing.
Section 3. Implementation. The City Manager is hereby authorized to take any and
all action necessary to implement the purposes and intent of this Resolution.
Section 4. Corrections. Conforming language or technical scrivener-type corrections
may be made by the City Attorney for any conforming amendments to be incorporated into the
final resolution for signature.

Effective Date. This Resolution shall become effective immediatel y upon
