A Resolution of the Mayor and City Commissioners of the City of South Miami
proclaiming September 25, 2022 to October 1, 2022 as Childhood Cancer
Awareness Week in the City of South Miami.
WHEREAS, the American Cancer Fund for Children and Kids Cancer Connection report
cancer is the leading cause of death by disease among U.S. children between infancy and age 15.
This tragic disease is detected in more than 16,000 of our country's young people every year. An
estimated 400,000 children and adolescents are diagnosed with cancer globally each year; and
WHEREAS, one in five of our nation's children loses his or her battle with cancer. Many
infants, children and teens will suffer from long-term effects of comprehensive treatment,
including secondary cancers; and
WHEREAS, 1 in 285 children in the United States will be diagnosed by his/her 20th birthday
with childhood cancer; and
WHEREAS, there are approximately 40,000 children on active treatment for childhood
cancer at any given time; and
WHEREAS, the average age of cancer diagnosis among children is 6 years old, compared to
66 years for adults; and
WHEREAS, 80% of childhood cancer patients are diagnosed late and with metastatic
cancer; and
WHEREAS, two-thirds of childhood cancer patients will have chronic health conditions as
a result of their treatment toxicity, with one quarter being classified as severe to life-threatening;
and
WHEREAS, in the last 20 years only four new drugs have been approved by the FDA to
specifically treat childhood cancer.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY
OF SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA THAT:
Section 1. The foregoing recitals are hereby ratified and confirmed as being true and
correct and are hereby made a specific part of this resolution upon adoption hereof.
Section 2. The Mayor and City Commissioners of the City of South Miami hereby
proclaim September 25, 2022 to October 1, 2022 as Childhood Cancer Awareness Week in the City
of South Miami and approve of the attached proclamation.

childhood cancer is the leading cause of death by disease in children in
the United States between infancy and age 75;
one in five of our nation 's children loses his or her battle with cancer.
Many infants, children and teens will suffer from long -term effects of
comprehensive treatment, including secondary cancers;
7 in 285 children in the United Sta tes will be diagnosed by his/her 20th
birthday with childhood cancer;
there are appro ximately 40,000 children on active treatment at any
given time;
the average age of cancer diagnosis among children is 6 years old,
compared to 66 years for adul ts;
80% of childhood cancer patients are diagnosed late and with metastatic
cancer;
on average there 's been a 0.6 percent increase in incidence per year since
the mid 7970's resulting in an overall incidence increase of 24 percen t
over the last 40 years;
two-thirds of childhood cancer patients will have chronic health
conditions as a result of their treatment toxicity, wi th one quarter being
classified as severe to life-threatening;

approximately one half of childhood cancer families rate the associated
financial strain due to out-of-pocket expenses as considerable to severe;
in the last 20 years only four new drugs have been approved by the FDA
to specifically treat childhood cancer;
the National Cancer Institute recognizes the unique research needs of
childhood cancer and the associated need for increased funding to carry
this out;
hundreds of non-profit organizations at the local and national level
including the American Childhood Cancer Organization are helping
children with cancer and their families cope through educational,
emotional and financial support;
researchers and healthcare professionals work diligently dedicating their
expertise to treat and cure children with cancer; and
too many children are affected by this deadly disease and more must be
done to raise awareness and find a cure.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Sally 8. Philips, fv1ayor along with my colleagues of the City Commission
-Commissioners Luis Gil, Walter Harris, Josh Liebman, and Brian Corey -do hereby proclaim
September 25, 2022 to October 7, 2022 as:
"Childhood Cancer Awareness Week"
in the City of South fv1iami, Florida . We further urge all citizens throughout the City of South
fv1iami to join with us in observing Childhood Cancer Awareness Week and supporting this
cause that so deeply impacts families in every community across our country.
