A Resolution of the Mayor and City Commissioners of the City of South
Miami approving the Proclamation recognizing the month of November 2021
as Men's Health Awareness Month.
WHEREAS, despite medical advances over the years, life expectancy for men is five
years shorter than women, half a million men die a year from cardiovascular disease, and 60% of
adult men are overweight or obese; and
WHEREAS, men are also three times more likely to die by suicide; and
WHEREAS, one in ten men experience depression or anxiety and less than half are
treated for it; and
WHEREAS, while the poor state of men's health is a result of a number of complex
factors that are in part due to: a lack of awareness and understanding of the health issues men
face, men not openly discussing their health and how they are feeling, reluctance to take action
when men don't feel physically or mentally well, and men engaging in risky activities that
threaten their health 1; and
WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Commissioners of the City of South Miami wish to
issue a proclamation to raise awareness of men's health issues; and
WHEREAS, Men's Health Awareness Month is the perfect occasion to shine a light on
the importance of the physical and mental health of the men in our community and to encourage
men to seek regular medical visits and early detection and treatment of illnesses.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOL VED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSIONERS OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The foregoing recitals are hereby ratified and confirmed as being true and they
are incorporated into this resolution by reference as if set forth in full herein.
Section 2. The Mayor and City Commission for the City of South Miami hereby approve
of the attached proclamation recognizing November 2021, as Men's Health Awareness Month.
Section 3. Corrections. Conforming language or technical scrivener-type corrections
may be made by the City Attorney for any conforming amendments to be incorporated into the
final resolution for signature.
Section 4. Severability. If any section clause, sentence, or phrase of this resolution is for
any reason held invalid or unconstitutional by a court of competent jurisdiction, the holding will
not affect the validity of the remaining portions of this resolution.

Section 5. Effective Date. This re so lution wi ll become effective immediatel y upon
adoption.

DECLARING NOVEMBER 2021 TO BE
MEN'S HEALTH A WARENESS MONTH
This proclamation declares November 2021 to be Men's Health Awareness Month in the City
of South Miami to raise awareness of men's health issues.

hereby proclaim November 2021:

in the City of South Miami, Florida. We urge all citizens throughout the City of South Miami
to join with us in observing Men's Health Awareness Month. We further encourage all
citizens to support their local communities' efforts to raise awareness of the importance of
the physical and mental health of the men in our community and to encourage men to seek
regular medical visits and early detedion and treatment of illnesses.
