A Resolution of the Mayor and City Commission of the City of South Miami, Florida,
supporting Miami-Dade County's Co-designating the portion of SW 57 th Avenue (Red
Road) from SW 80th Street to SW 88th Street as "Nilda R. Pedrosa Way" directing the City
Clerk to submit this Resolution to Miami Dade County and take all other necessary
actions to carry out the purpose of this Resolution.
WHEREAS, through a distinguished and impactful career in public service that spanned more than
two decades, Nilda R. Pedrosa proudly served her beloved Miami-Dade County community, the State of
Florida, and the United States in various leadership roles; and
WHEREAS, born on February 24, 1974, at Mercy Hospital to a Cuban American father and a Puerto
Rican mother, Pedrosa grew up in Miami and graduated from Our Lady of Lourdes Academy before
attending Miami Dade College and Florida International University, where she earned a bachelor's degree
in 1996; and
WHEREAS, Pedrosa went on to earn her law degree from New England Law I Boston in 1999 and;
WHEREAS, Pedrosa served in the U.S. Department of State as the Secretary of State's liaison to
state and local governments, and also served in both houses of the u.S. Congress, including as a Senior
Policy Advisor to U.S. Senator Mel Martinez from 2005 to 2008 and as Chief of Staff to u.s. Congressman
Mario Dias Balart from 2009-2010; and
WHEREAS, Pedrosa was also Chief of Staff to Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi from 2013 to
2019, a role in which she worked on the development and implementation of major policy initiatives,
including the fight against human trafficking; and
WHEREAS, in addition, Pedrosa also served on three different Florida Judicial Nominating
Commissions, including as Vice Chair of the Florida Supreme Court Judicial Nominating Commission; and
WHEREAS, most recently, Pedrosa served in the u.S. Department of State, first as the State
Department's White House Liaison and then as Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public
Affairs, making her the highest-ranking women in the State Depa'rtment at that time and only second
Hispanic to serve as an Under Secretary; and
WHEREAS, equally committed to serving the Miami-Dade County community, Pedrosa also
previously served as the founding Director of Public Policy & Governmental Relations at Nicklaus
Children's Hospital in Miami, as an Assistant Dean of the Florida International University College of Law,
and as a Board Member of Amigos for Kids, a non-profit organization dedicated to the prevention of child
abuse and neglect; and
WHEREAS, Pedrosa passed away at the age of 46 on January 23, 2021, after her courageous battle
with cancer; and
WHEREAS, Pedrosa is survived by her loving husband Eliot and two young twins, Emma Rose and
Elias; and

WHEREAS, that portion of SW 57 th Avenue (Red Road) from SW 80th Street to SW 88th Street is a
County-maintained road that borders the City of South Miami; and
WHEREAS, in recognition of Pedrosa's contributions to her community and country, and to honor
her memory, Miami-Dade County is considering co-designating the portion of SW 57 t h Avenue (Red Road)
from SW 80th Street to SW 88 th Street as "Nilda R. Pedrosa Way"; and
WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Commission for the City of South Miami support the co-designation
of that portion of SW 57 th Avenue (Red Road) from SW 80 t h Street to SW 88th Street.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SOUTH
MIAMI, flORIDA.
Section 1. The City Commission wishes to co-designate that portion of SW 57 th Avenue (Red Road)
from SW 80 th Street to SW 88 th Street as "N ild a R. Pedrosa Way", and signs sha ll be made and in sta lled
declaring that designation. The City Clerk is directed to subm it this Resolution to Miami-Dade County and
to take all other necessary actions to carry out the purpose of this Resolution.
Section 2. Corrections. Conforming language or technical scrivener-type corrections may be made
by the City Attorney for any conforming amendments to be incorporated into the final resolution for
signat ure.
Section 3. The City Clerk is instructed to deliver a copy of this resolution to the Clerk ofthe Board
of County Commissioners and to the individual Commissioners.
Section 4. Severability. If any section clause, sentence, or phrase of this resolution is for any
reason held invalid or unconstitutional by a court of competent jurisdiction, the holding will not affect the
va lidity of the remaining portions of this re solution.
Section 5. Effective Date. This resolution will become effective immediately upon adoption.
