Res No 109-20-15549RESOLUTION NO.:109-20-15549 A Resolution of the Mayor and City Commissioners of the City of South Miami proclaiming September 2020 as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in the City of South Miami. WHEREAS, childhood cancer is the leading cause of death by disease in children; and WHEREAS, too many children are affected by this deadly disease and more must be done to raise awareness and find a cure; and WHEREAS,1 in 285 children in the United States will be diagnosed by their 20th birthday; and WHEREAS, 15,780 children annually are diagnosed with cancer in the U.S.; and WHEREAS, there are approximately 40,000 children on active treatment at any given time; and WHEREAS, the average age of cancer diagnosis among children is 6 years old, compared to 66 years for adults; and WHEREAS, 80% of childhood cancer patients are diagnosed late and with metastatic cancer, and WHEREAS, two-thirds of childhood cancer patients will have chronic health conditions as a result of their treatment toxicity, with one quarter being classified as severe to life -threatening; and WHEREAS, in the last 20 years only four new drugs have been approved by the FDA to specifically treat childhood cancer. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIANII, FLORIDA THAT: Section 1. The foregoing recitals are hereby ratified and confirmed as being true and correct and are hereby made a specific part of this resolution upon adoption hereof. Section 2. The Mayor and City Commissioners of the City of South Miami hereby proclaim September 2020 as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in the City of South Miami as per the attached proclamation. Section 3. Corrections. Conforming language or technical scrivener -type corrections may be made by the City Attorney for any conforming amendments to be incorporated into the final resolution for signature. Section 4. Severability. If any section clause, sentence, or phrase of this resolution is Page 1 of 2 Resolution No. 109-20-15549 for any reason held invalid or unconstitutional by a court of competent jurisdiction, the holding shall not affect the validity of the remaining portions of this resolution. NOW, THEREFORE,1, Sally B. Philips, Mayor along with my colleagues of the City Commission: Vice Mayor Bob Welsh, Commissioners Luis Git Walter Harris, and Josh Liebman do hereby proclaim September 2020 as. - "Childhood Cancer Awareness Month"' in the City of South Miami, Florida. We further urge all citizens throughout the City of South Miami to join with us in observing Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and supporting this cause that so deeply impacts families in every community across our country.
