We are requesting that item number 2 be deferred to the next City Commission meeting as requested by Commissioner Liebman and Mayor Stoddard and agreed to by Mr Pepe. The City of South Miami's Parks and Recreation Department was chosen as one of 85 Make a Splash programs in the U.S. to receive grant money from the USA Swimming Foundation in early 2019. The awarded money will go towards the department's continued efforts to provide free or reduced-cost swim lessons. The money we received will be put towards our year-end goal of graduating 80 new kids from our learn to swim program. Since opening Murray Park Aquatic Center in August 2014, the swim lesson program as part of the South Miami Parks and Recreation Department has grown exponentially. In 2016, the city began its partnership with iSwim Academy. That year alone, swim lesson registration and participation grew 218% from 2015. In 2017, aquatics programming grew another 170%. This past year, 2018 swim lessons grew by 12%. Murray Park Aquatic Center hosts group and private swim lessons as well as recreational swim teams and adult swim clinics. Through this grant award, the city will be able to offer more swim lessons to more people, helping achieve the overall goal of saving lives through swim lessons. South Miami 1111 CITY 01 PI rf\Si\~T IIVINe; CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER MEMORANDUM It appears that the development/construction for the TREO SOMI project located adjacent to the South Miami Metro Rail Station, has started. Under the rules of the County this project will proceed without our review, approval or consent from the CSM Building Department. A construction fence was recently erected by Moss Construction without our knowledge. The Comprehensive Annual Financial Report or CAFR, is being finalized and will be distributed as soon as it is, but the main highlight from it is that the City's $22 million in revenues exceeded the $ 19.9 million in expenses for governmental activities, providing a $ 2.5 million increase in total net position. Additionally, since I have been Manager, we have only added 2 general government positions, but in building and zoning we have reduced 13 positions and in public works we have reduced 6 positions over those same years. I have been asked to join a panel of 6 experts for a discussion regarding opportunity zones in Miami Dade County. The presentation will be very early tomorrow morning in Coral Gables. The panel is composed of experts from real estate, accounting, development and law: Joe Hernandez (Real Estate Chair) -Weiss Serota Carol Surowiec, CPA (Tax Partner) -Cherry Bekaert David S. Neufeld (Tax Partner) -Flaster Greenberg Michael T. Fay (Principal & Managing Director) -Avison Young Michael D. Wohl -Coral Rock Development Group Drew Demers (Partner) -Weiss Serota Steve Alexander (City Manager) -City of South Miami Passover 2019 will begin in the evening of Friday, April 19 and ends in the evening of Saturday, April 27. This was brought to my attention as we are looking at Tuesday, April 23 as a possible date for second reading of the Shops at Sunset Place proposal. Is the 23 rd a date that anyone objects to favoring, April 30 as an alternative?
