A Resolution of the Mayor and City Commission for the City of South Miami 3
encouraging the City of Miami to relocate the Confederate States of America 4
memorial from its prominent location in the Miami City Cemetery.5

WHEREAS,in a prominent location of the City of Miami Cemetery, there exists a 7
monument labeled “CSA”, which stands for the Confederate States of America and that has a 8
Confederate Battle Flag carved into the stone; and9

WHEREAS,the monument, was paid for and constructed on the grounds of the Old 11
Dade County Courthouse in 1913 by the Southern Cross Chapter of United Daughters of the 12
Confederacy. The monument was dedicated on the 106th anniversary of the birth of Confederate 13
States of America President Jefferson Davis on June 3, 1914; and14

WHEREAS,the monument was moved from the Dade County Courthouse in 1927 to its 16
present site in the “Confederate Circle” in the City of Miami Cemetery; and17

WHEREAS,the words “Our Heroes” are written on the base of the monument, the 19
Confederate veterans are not heroes to many, especially the descendants of the African 20
Americans whose enslavement they fought to maintain; and21

WHEREAS,throughout the United States of America there have been many similar 23
monuments that have been removed from their locations and moved to other places where their 24
historical context can be better explained.25

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY 27
COMMISSIONERS OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA:28

Section 1. The Mayor and City Commission hereby request that the City of Miami 30
Commission cause the removal of this monument to the Confederacy from the City of Miami 31
Cemetery and relocate it to a place of less prominence.32

Section 2. Severability.If any section clause, sentence, or phrase of this resolution is for 34
any reason held invalid or unconstitutional by a court of competent jurisdiction, the holding shall 35
not affect the validity of the remaining portions of this resolution.36

Section 3. Effective Date.This resolution shall become effective immediately upon 38
adoption.39
