A Resolution of the Mayor and City Commission for the City of South Miami
to petition Homeland Security and petition the court to drop the deportation
charges against Denise Kolb Covington.
WHEREAS, Denise Kolb Covington has been a long-time resident of the City of South
Miami, and
WHEREAS, she has served as a member of the Community Redevelopment Agency of
the City of South Miami, and
WHEREAS, she has been an active citizen, having been positively involved in the City's
elections and, also, having actively voiced her opinions at Commission meetings; and
WHEREAS, she is the daughter of an American Service man stationed in Germany in
the 1960s; and
WHEREAS, she has had a prestigious employment career for over 27 years with no
legal problems; and
WHEREAS, she has raised two daughters, one who works for the United States Post
Office and one who is currently serving in the U. S. Navy; and
WHEREAS, she is the caretaker of her two grand-daughters during their mother's active
Naval duty; and
WHEREAS, she has been honored by Habitat for Humanity to help build and buy her
own house; and
WHEREAS, Denise Covington is a responsible citizen who is known as a forthright,
conscientious, active and disciplined member of this community; and
WHEREAS, she was detained on January 30, 2018, by Homeland Security for 32 days
and Homeland Security is currently taking action to deport her; and
WHEREAS, deporting her would be a significant loss to her family, to her employer, to
her neighbors, to her City, and to the United States.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA THAT:
Section 1. The Mayor and City Commission hereby petition Homeland Security and the
immigration court to drop the deportation charges against Denise Kolb Covington.

Section 2. The City Clerk is instructed to send a copy of this resolution to the appropriate
person at Homeland Security and to deliver it to Denise Covington's attorney or Denise
Covington to be filed with the immigration court.
Section 3. Severability. If any section clause, sentence, or phrase of this resolution is for
any reason held invalid or unconstitutional by a court of competent jurisdiction, the holding shall
not affect the validity of the remaining portions of this resolution.
Section 4. Effective Date. This resolution shall become effective immediately upon
adoption by vote of the City Commission.
