I. INTRODUCTION
There are many important reasons to follow guidelines—both legal and self-imposed—for using the
trademarks of Lake-Sumter State College. However, the legal aspects of trademark and brand use are
only part of the responsibility. The proper communications and creative applications of trademarks
are also important in the marketplace.
While there must be discipline demonstrated in the use of trademarks, LSSC must also exercise good
creative instincts within these boundaries. Therefore, this manual introduces the integrated standards
for the Lake-Sumter State College brand—the goal of which is to achieve a cohesive, consistent visual
and verbal presentation that is recognized and embraced by all of the College’s various constituencies.
Lake-Sumter State College trademarks must be preserved and defended from encroachment or
misuse, and it is important for the administration and staff of LSSC to be good stewards of the school’s
intellectual property by being informed about proper trademark use.
The guidelines that follow provide the information required to maintain proper trademark standards for
the LSSC brand. This includes making certain that vendors, suppliers and other partners also respect and
conform to these guidelines.

GLOSSARY
An understanding of the vocabulary of branding and brand protection is essential in order for
Lake-Sumter State College to properly use and protect these valuable elements. This vocabulary includes
the following:
• COMMON LAW TRADEMARK: A registered trademark that is in use, but has not been
registered by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office;
• COPYRIGHT: The exclusive right to make copies, to perform, to publish or to otherwise
exploit a literary, musical or artistic work in any form;
• COPYRIGHT NOTICE: A notice or statement appearing in a prominent place on a literary,
musical or other artistic work that alerts others that a copyright is being claimed for that
work. The publication of a work without a copyright notice may result in the loss of some legal
protection of the work;
• LEGAL LINE: The copy or language that identifies a trademark and designates its ownership;
• LOGO OR LOGOMARK: A trademark appearing in a particular graphic presentation,
as opposed to appearing in normal type or copy;
• MARK: A short name for trademark or service mark;
• REGISTERED TRADEMARK: A trademark that has been officially granted registration status
by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office;
• SERVICE MARK: A trademark used to identify a service, rather than a product;
• SM: The symbol (or initials) used to designate an unregistered service mark;
GLOSSARY |
PAGE 3
GLOSSARY
• THEMELINE (OR SLOGAN): A trademark consisting of a marketing phrase, theme
or nomenclature;
• TM: The symbol (or initials) used to designate an unregistered trademark;
• TRADE NAME: A name by which a company, business or organization is commonly referred to.
This is sometimes a shortened form of the full legal name of the entity;
• TRADEMARK ®: The preferred notice used to indicate that a mark is registered; and
• TRADEMARKS ®: The preferred notice to use when multiple registered trademarks
are combined.

II. TRADEMARK GUIDELINES
As Lake-Sumter State College has grown into a baccalaureate institution, it will become an even better
known brand in its immediate catchment area and garner increased recognized throughout Florida
and the United States.
The power of the College, the influence of its people, and the strength of its brand identity and
trademarks will help sustain the global acceptability of the College’s new trademarks. These trademarks
will also enhance the marketing of LSSC’s educational services. And in turn, LSSC staff, faculty,
administration and vendors will all be responsible for ensuring that these trademarks are used within
standards and guidelines that reflect the quality of the institution and the integrity of its brand.
Trademarks, unlike patents (which expire after a statutory-set time), can be the College’s exclusive property
forever. As long as the LSSC team uses its trademarks properly and takes the necessary steps to protect
them from misuse or infringement, the College can maintain the exclusive right to use them.
Failure to use the College’s trademarks properly may result in them becoming generic public property
and free for use by others everywhere. As such, they would no longer serve LSSC’s business needs.
(Examples of trademarks that ultimately became generic include aspirin, cellophane, kerosene, Kleenex, elevator
and escalator.)
TRADEMARK GUIDELINES |
PAGE 5
CORRECT USE WITHIN COPY
When trademarks are used in copy, we must always ensure that they stand out from other wording.
We can accomplish this in several ways:
EXAMPLES
• DIFFERENT TYPEFACES: Success takes flight Where Futures Soar.
• USE OF QUOTATION MARKS: Success takes flight “Where Futures Soar.”
PLEASE NOTE: The name Lake-Sumter State College should always include the letters L, S, S and C
capitalized, and a hyphen should always be placed between the words “Lake” and
“Sumter,” with no additional space provided.
CORRECT USE OF REGISTRATION NOTICES
The trademark registration notice should be used the first time that a mark appears in either a headline
or text. Use “Trademark” ® or the symbol ® for this designation.
In cases where the mark is not registered, the symbol “TM” for products and “SM” for services should
be used. If you are unsure of a mark’s registration status, please contact the College President’s office.
PLEASE NOTE: When “Lake-Sumter State College” is used as a trade name to identify a business entity,
no registration notice (such as a ®) is required.
TRADEMARK GUIDELINES |
PAGE 6
TRADEMARKS SET IN TYPE
When the College’s trademarks are set in type, a hyphen should always appear between “Lake” and
“Sumter” in the College’s name, and the trademark should not be altered in any way.
EXAMPLES
• CORRECT USE: Lake-Sumter State College
• INCORRECT USE: Lake Sumter State College
• INCORRECT USE: Lake-Sumter College
DEPARTMENT USE
Departments may be viewed as speaking for Lake-Sumter State College. Therefore, care should be
exercised when showing the relationship between the College and its constituent departments.
Departments should be clearly identified on all promotional materials and copy originating from them:
EXAMPLES
• CORRECT USE: Lake-Sumter State College Office of Academic Affairs
• INCORRECT USE: Academic Affairs Office at Lake-Sumter State College
In all cases, it should be clear that the department is part of the College and speaks on behalf of the
broader institution.
USING LEGAL COPY LINE
Whenever LSSC trademarks are used in advertising or other written public communications, a legal copy
line should be included one time wherever possible in order to indicate the ownership of the trademark
in the format of a footnote.
EXAMPLES
• CORRECT USE: “ Where Futures Begin” and the Lakehawks mascot are trademarks of
Lake-Sumter State College.
TRADEMARK GUIDELINES |
PAGE 7
TRADEMARK SEARCHES AND INFRINGEMENT
Lake-Sumter State College respects the trademark rights of others. Therefore, no trademark, themeline,
promotional logo or symbol should be adopted or used without review by the College President’s office
to ensure that no infringement is taking place.
The College makes every effort to avoid the infringement of other parties’ rights, and it cannot allow any
misuse or infringement of its own trademarks by other parties. Consequently, any suspected trademark
misuse or infringement should be reported to the College President’s office as soon as possible.
Examples of the possible infringement should be provided, as well as any other pertinent information.
USE OF THEMELINES (OR SLOGANS)
The College’s themeline, Where Futures Soar, should always be used as intended and never altered.
Additionally, the College’s name should always be present with the themeline.
EXAMPLES
• CORRECT USE: Achieve your dreams with Lake-Sumter State College, Where Futures Soar.
• INCORRECT USE: Where Futures Fly.
FONTS
WEISS: The Lake-Sumter State College logomarks use a modified version of Weiss, a strong serif
font that dates back to 1926. It is a classic, elegant font that suggests stability and trust.
This font family is used primarily for headlines and department designations in the College
branding materials.
FRUTIGER : To compliment the use of Weiss, the College branding materials use this sanf-serif font family
for body copy, which provides a clean, contempory feel.
These fonts should be used whenever possible in all commmunications for Lake-Sumter State College.
If these fonts are not available, the closest equivalents should be used.
TRADEMARK GUIDELINES |

III. COLLEGE LOGOMARKS
INTEGRATED STANDARDS
The primary logomark design for Lake-Sumter State College is a unique integration of copy and design
elements that will become synonymous with the College brand.
As a logomark, the design contains distinctive type and a wave that comprise the trademark, as well as
the new shield symbol. The registration notice should therefore be plural (“Trademarks ®”) in all of the
marketing applications where these elements appear.
EXAMPLE
Additional logomarks for the College include the official seal, the mascot design and copy, the LSSC
logomark and the Foundation’s logomark. The same integrated trademark standards apply to each.
EXAMPLES
®
®
®
®®
PLEASE NOTE: When using the registerd trademark symbol “®” with any graphic element, the “®”
should appear within close proximity to the graphic (as shown), be set in Frutiger
condensed or equivalent sans-serif font and not be smaller than 5 point.

COLORS
The College colors are critical components of LSSC’s identity or branding standards. Though the precise
interpretation of these colors may vary slightly depending upon the manner in which they are
reproduced, the goal is to achieve a consistent visual impression in every application.
The following are the standards that are acceptable for one-color reproduction, two-color reproduction
and full-color reproduction.
MAIN COLORS: Color has an effect on one’s emotions and the way a product or service is perceived.
Therefore, it is wise for us to be conscious of what the colors used in the College’s
marketing program convey:
• Rich Green: This is a color associated with history, nobility and wisdom, as well as
nature and prosperity—all positive qualities that reflect well on the College.
The PMS color used is PMS 349; and
• Medium Blue: The color blue is often used to represent water, and obviously
suggests LSSC’s waterfront location. Blues also evoke a sense of peace and serenity.
Freshness, cleanliness and strength have long been associated with blue too,
which is why they are used in product designs for cleaning products, breath mints,
et cetera. The PMS color used is PMS 284.
Additional colors such as orange and red are found in the logo, which suggest the strength of the
College. If only one color is available for reproduction, the preferred color is our rich green.
PMS 349
(GREEN)
PMS 284
(BLUE)
PAGE 10COLLEGE LOGOMARKS |
COLORS
The logomark is displayed best when it appears on a white background and with a generous amount
of white space around it. If only black is available for reproduction, the size of the logomark should be
somewhat small.
EXAMPLES
When the logomark appears non-white or dark backgrounds, a thin white border should be used around
the logomark to separate it from those backgrounds. Additionally, the Lake-Sumter State College type
should be reversed as shown.
EXAMPLES
PLEASE NOTE: Additional examples of all College logomarks and their respective light and dark
background usages are found in the addendum.
PAGE 11COLLEGE LOGOMARKS |
SIZES AND RELATIONSHIPS
The size of all logomark elements is predetermined for proper balance and ease of reproduction.
The College’s logomark is composed of several elements that identify the LSSC brand. When used in
combination, the relationship between these elements should never be altered.
EXAMPLES
SPECIFICATIONS
• The logomark height should be equal to three of the height designated as “A” in the logotype; and
• The distance between the elements should be equal to the height designated as “B” in the logotype.

AREA OF ISOLATION
Whenever possible, it is best to give the logomarks a prominent “visual buffer” from other grapical
elements, such as additional logos, complex imagery, patterns and body copy. The ideal distance for
the College logomarks is illustrated below:
PARTIALLY OBSCURED LOGOMARKS
Every effort should be made to avoid obscuring parts of the College’s logos, logomarks or trademarks.
However, when obscuring a mark is simply unavoidable, the following should be considered:
1. THE OBSCURED PORTION: The obscured portion of the branding element should be as small
as possible; and
2. A COMPLETE VERSION: A complete version of the partially obscured logo or logomark must
be readily visible to the person seeing the obscured version of the mark.
The College’s logomarks are designed to be cohesive units, and any deviation from their standard
forms will dilute their distinctiveness, hinder their effectiveness and potentially render them as generic.
Consequently, the unit should never be altered.

EXAMPLES OF UNACCEPTABLE USE
• Never change the shape of an LSSC logomark;
• Never use it for decorative purposes or patterns;
• Never use colors that are alien to
the Lake-Sumter State College brand;
• Never use the “wave” outside of a logo;
• Never enclose the logos in a shape; and
• Never reverse or flop any element of
the logomarks.
