Menendez, CMC City Clerk CITY COMMISSION MINUTES February 20, 2018 > !\.pproved Philip'~E?tbddard, PhD 7 THE CITY OF PLEASANT LIVING To: FROM: DATE: SUBJECT: CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER MEMORANDUM The Honorable Mayor & Members of the City Commission Steven Alexander February 20, 2018 Managers Report Welcome to our new Commissioner, Luis Gil! With regard to the clearing of hurricane debris in the canals throughout the City, I had a productive conversation with Lee Hefty on behalf of the County who is convening meetings between his staff (DERM) and the Public Works staffs to address the South Miami situation relative to cleaning the canals without a local partner. He did however vocalize his agreement that the County had the responsibility to clean the hurricane debris in the canals but did not have a time frame for that process. In an effort to improve pedestrian safety, the Florida Department of Transportation (FOOT) District Six is investing $3.2 million in pedestrian safety lighting improvements at various locations along SR 5/US 1 from SE 4 Street to SW 344 Street, in Miami-Dade County. Our municipality falls within the vicinity of these lighting projects. Construction is expected to begin between February 2019 and August 2019 and last about six months, per project. The proposed improvements include upgrading light poles with Light Emitting Diode (LED) fixtures, removing and/or replacing existing light poles and adding new light poles with LED fixtures at select signalized intersections with pedestrian crossings to increase brightness in order to meet the new. FOOT lighting requirements. The City of South Miami is proud to announce our new status from the League of American Bicyclists as the recipient of a Bronze award as a Bicycle Friendly Community. The Bicycle Friendly Community program provides a roadmap to improving conditions for bicycling and C-~iI't':Gt;";" Sou[hlMiami THF. CITY OF PLEASANT LIVING CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER MEMORANDUM guidance to help make each community's vIsion for a better, bikeable community a reality. There are only 5 other cities in Miami Dade County that have won recognition from the League of American Bicyclists for their friendliness to bikes and their riders. There are currently only 430 recognized Bicycle Friendly Communities in the entire nation. K9 bullet proof vest was created and donated by Protect the Paws, Kathe Holmes. We appreciate her interest in helping us keep our Police dog, Jack, safe. The medical marijuana business zoning that the Commission approved in April has now been by the Florida Legislature as it relates to local control of location requirements for medical marijuana facilities. This includes a preemption on location and number of such facilities. The Planning Board hearing on the draft revIsions to the comprehensive plan again on Tuesday, February 27th at 7 pm in the Commission Chambers. The Commission will hold two more. The dates for those hearings have not been set, but we expect them to be held in March. The draft plan can be found on the City's website, under the Planning Board meeting agenda for those who want to view it prior to the meetings.
