3 A Resolution authorizing the use of the City's name at a special event
4 supporting the Never Again movement and the March for Our Lives and
5 authorizing the City Manager to provide financial and other support for the
6 event.

8 WHEREAS, on February 14, 2018, there was a mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman
9 Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, which resulted in the tragic death of 17 students
10 and faculty; and
11
12 WHEREAS, it is the 30th mass shooting1 in the United States so far this year; and
13
14 WHEREAS, 58 people have already been killed and 124 injured in mass shootings in
15 the United States in the first two months of this year alone; and
16
17 WHEREAS, when such tragedies occur everyone is quick to offer thoughts and
18 prayers but no actual action is taken; and
19
20 WHEREAS, as shocking as the deaths from mass shootings are, it is even more
21 sobering that in 2017, the 437 deaths from mass shootings only accounted for 2.8% ofthe
22 total 15,590 people who died due to gun violence; and
23
24 WHEREAS, students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School have started an
25 activist movement (Never Again) that emerged in its aftermath of the mass shooting in
26 Parkland, a policy goal of stricter gun legislation and a plan for a nationwide protest and a
27 march in Washington, D.C. (a March for Our Lives,) scheduled for March 24th ;and
28
29 WHEREAS, the City of South Miami passed and adopted a resolution
30 calling on the Florida legislature to enact stricter gun legislation; and
31
32 WHEREAS, Vice Mayor Walter Harris has reserved space at Palmer Park
33 for a special event supporting the Never Again movement and the March for Our
34 Lives; and
35
36 WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Commission desire to support the "Never Again"
37 movement, the nationwide protest against gun violence and the "March for Our Lives" protest
38 march.

40 NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
41 COMMISSIONERS OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA:

1 Section 1. The City Manager is instructed to provide support for the Vice Mayor's special
2 event, including the expenditure of the necessary funds to provide a sound system for the event
3 and the City Commission hereby authorizes the Vice Mayor to use the City's name as a sponsor
4 . of the event.

6 Section 3. Severability. If any section clause, sentence, or phrase of this resolution is for
7 any reason held invalid or unconstitutional by a court of competent jurisdiction, the holding shall
8 not affect the validity of the remaining portions of this resolution.

10 Section 4. Effective Date. This resolution shall become effective immediately upon
11 adoption.
