A Resolution of the Mayor and City Commission of the City of South Miami,
Florida, Co-designating the portion of S.W. 76 th Street, between S.W. 57th Avenue
and S.W. 60 th Avenue as "Jose Basulto Street" directing the City Clerk to submit
this Resolution to Miami-Dade County and to take all other necessary actions to
carry out the purpose of this Resolution.
Whereas, Mr. Basulto has been a long-time resident of the City of South Miami; and
Whereas, Mr. Basulto received his bachelor's degree from Florida International University
and his Master's of Business Administration from Cornell University.
Whereas, Mr. Basulto is a member of several boards including Habitat for Humanity of
Miami, South Florida Fishing Club, Pacific National Bank and the American Diabetes Association
Community Leadership Board.
Whereas, Mr. Basulto has been a member of the South Broward Hospital District Board of
Commissioners, and reappointed by Governor Rick Scott for a term ending June 30, 2017; and
Whereas, Mr. Basulto founded Brothers to the Rescue in 1991, described as a humanitarian
organization aiming to assist and rescue raft refugees emigrating from Cuba, literally saving
thousands of lives of men, women and children that otherwise would had been lost in the Florida
straight, and to "support the efforts of the Cuban people to free themselves from dictatorship
through the use of active nonviolence";
Whereas, Sec. 17-10.1 of the City'S Code of Ordinances provide:
(a) No naming of a public street or piece of public property shall be approved unless the
person being honored is done so posthumously.

(c) These requirements may be waived by a four-fifths (4/5) vote of the City Commission.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA, that:
Section 1. The City Commission hereby waives the requirements of Section 17-10.1,
subsection 1 and co-designates the portion of S.W. 76 th Street, between S.W. 57 th Avenue and S.W.
60 th Avenue as "Jose Basulto Street" and that it shall, as soon as authorized by Miami Dade County,
be known in and by the City of South Miami as S.W. 76 th Street, and that portion of S.W. 76 th Street
between S.W. 57 th Avenue and S.W. 60 th Avenue shall also be known as "Jose Basulto Street", and
signs shall be made and installed declaring that designation.
Section 2. This Resolution shall be provided to the US Postal Service and to the appropriate
agencies to co-designate the portion of S.W. 76 th Street, between S.W. 57 th Avenue and S.W. 60 th
Avenue as "Jose Basulto Street." and the City Clerk shall take all action necessary to carry out the
intent of this resolution.
Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption.
