A Resolution authorizing the use of the City's name at a special event
supporting the Never Again movement and the March for Our Lives and
authorizing the City Manager to provide financial and other support for the
event.
WHEREAS, on February 14,2018, there was a mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman
Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, which resulted in the tragic death of 17 students
and faculty; and
WHEREAS, it is the 30th mass shooting! in the United States so far this year; and
WHEREAS, 58 people have already been killed and 124 injured in mass shootings in
the United States in the first two months of this year alone; and
WHEREAS, when such tragedies occur everyone is quick to offer thoughts and
prayers but no actual action is taken; and
WHEREAS, as shocking as the deaths from mass shootings are, it is even more
sobering that in 2017, the 437 deaths from mass shootings only accounted for 2.8% ofthe
total 15,590 people who died due to gun violence; and
WHEREAS, students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School have started an
activist movement (Never Again) that emerged in its aftermath of the mass shooting in
Parkland, a policy goal of stricter gun legislation and a plan for a nationwide protest and a
march in Washington, D.C. (a March for Our Lives,) scheduled for March 24th ;and
WHEREAS, the City of South Miami passed and adopted a resolution
calling on the Florida legislature to enact stricter gun legislation; and
WHEREAS, Vice Mayor Walter Harris has reserved space at Palmer Park
for a special event supporting the Never Again movement and the March for Our
Lives; and
WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Commission desire to support the "Never Again"
movement, the nationwide protest against gun violence and the "March for Our Lives" protest
march.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSIONERS OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA:

Section 1. The City Manager is instructed to provide support for the Vice Mayor's special
event, including the expenditure of up to $2,000 and the Vice Mayor shall raise the remainder of
the costs of the event. The City Commission hereby authorizes the Vice Mayor to use the City's
name as a sponsor of the event.
Section 3. Severability. If any section clause, sentence, or phrase of this resolution is for
any reason held invalid or unconstitutional by a court of competent jurisdiction, the holding shall
not affect the validity of the remaining portions of this resolution.
Section 4. Effective Date. This resolution shall become effective immediately upon
adoption.
