WHEREAS, the Venezuelan Supreme Court has dismissed the elected Congress of Venezuela, thus allowing President Nicolas Maduro to establish an unchecked dictatorship; and WHEREAS. there exist 50,000 undocumented Venezuelans residing within the United States who would be in grave danger of physical hann if they are forced to return to their country. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSIONERS OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA THAT: Section 1. The City of South Miami calls on the federal government to renew the Temporary Protective Status of the 50,000 undocumented Venezuelans living in the United States until it is safe for them to return home. Section 2. Severability. If any section clause, sentence, or phrase of this resolution is for any reason held invalid or unconstitutional by a court of competent jurisdiction, the holding shall not affect the validity of the remaining portions of this resolution. Section 3. Effective Date. This resolution shall become effective immediately upon adoption. PASSED AND ADOPTED this __ day of _____ , 2017.
