_add-on b)Add-on Item b) Sponsored by: Vice Mayor Welsh City Commission Meeting: 06-06-17 Page 1 of 2 RESOLUTION NO. _________________________ 1 2 A Resolution supporting the Climate Mayors letter to commit to reducing carbon 3 emissions in response to President Trump’s announcement withdrawing the U.S. 4 from the Paris accord. 5 6 WHEREAS, on June 1, 2017, President Trump announced that the U.S. will withdraw 7 from the international climate agreement known as the Paris accord; and 8 9 WHEREAS, on the same day, in an open letter (“Climate Mayors letter”), the mayors of 10 61 U.S. cities — from Burlington, Vermont, to Los Angeles — promised to meet commitments 11 agreed to under the international accord, namely cutting carbon emissions in an effort to ward off 12 the worst effects of global climate change; and 13 14 WHEREAS, the Paris Agreement (a/k/a “Paris accord”) is designed to keep the planet 15 from warming by more than 1.5 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels and relies on 16 voluntary cuts in emissions by all member nations; and 17 18 WHEREAS, California Governor Jerry Brown, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo 19 and Washington Governor Jay Inslee announced the formation of the United States Climate 20 Alliance, a coalition that will bring together states committed to upholding the Paris Agreement; 21 and 22 23 WHEREAS, Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, a co-signer of the Climate Mayors letter, told 24 HuffPost after Trump’s announcement that, “The president’s announcement is a call to greater 25 action, not less action. It’s a call to a higher level of sensitivity, not a time for merely frustration 26 … There’s enough low-hanging fruit in America’s major metros to still achieve our CO₂ 27 reductions ... to the tune of about 25 to 35 percent”; and 28 29 WHEREAS, the City of South Miami recognizes the reality of climate change and 30 supports the cutting of carbon emissions in an effort to ward off the worst effects of global 31 climate change. 32 33 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY 34 COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA THAT: 35 36 Section 1. The City of South Miami Commission supports the Climate Mayors letter to 37 commit to reducing carbon emissions in response to President Trump’s announcement 38 withdrawing the U.S. from the Paris accord. 39 40 Section 2. Severability. If any section clause, sentence, or phrase of this resolution is for 41 any reason held invalid or unconstitutional by a court of competent jurisdiction, the holding shall 42 not affect the validity of the remaining portions of this resolution. 43 44 Section 3. Effective Date.
