A Resolution Mayor and City Commission of the City of South Miami,
Florida,authorizing the Mayor,Philip K.Stoddard,to join the Mayors
National Climate Action Agenda with its attendant commitments to climate
protection.
WHEREAS,the Mayor and City Commission recognize that greenhouse gas
emissions from human activity have been proven bythe best science tobe heating the
oceans and atmosphere,accelerating sealevelrise,and acidifying the planet's oceans;and
WHEREAS,all of South Florida,including theCity of South Miami,is threatened
existentially by sea level rise induced by global warming;and
WHEREAS,on May 1,2012,theCity Commission unanimously approved a
resolution sending a letter to U.S.Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)Administrator
Lisa P.Jackson,supporting the EPA's increased efforts to reduce greenhouse gas
pollution under the Clean Air Act;and
WHEREAS,the City of South Miami has joined 24 states,Broward County and
numerous municipalities around the county and intervened inthe case of West Virginia v.
EPA (D.C.Cir.No.15-1363)to support enforcement of Obama administration EPA's
Clean Air Act rules;and
WHEREAS,the City of South Miami prides itself on being a leader inthe fight
against climate change and for clean air,having signed the Mayors'Climate Protection
Agreement and working to promote solar energy,increase inthe City's tree canopy,andto
promote alternate transportation;and
WHEREAS,Mayor Stoddard has been asked to join and support the Mayors
National Climate Action Agenda,a national group of Mayors dedicated to reducing
greenhouse gas emissions and supporting theParis Climate Agreement in protection of the
planet.
NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI,FLORIDA,THAT:
Section 1.TheCity Commission hereby authorizes the Mayor Philip K.
Stoddard to include South Miami asa member of the Mayors National Climate Action
Agenda,andtousetheCitylogoorsealasanindication of our City's membership.
Section 2.If any section clause,sentence,or phrase of this resolution isfor
any reason held invalid or unconstitutional byacourt of competent jurisdiction,the
holdingshallnotaffectthe validity of theremainingportions of thisresolution.
Section 3.This resolution shalltakeeffect immediately uponadoption.
