Responseto Field Expertise:
I have several years of professional and academic expertise in planning and architectural design.
Through the years,I haveworkedonboth large and small scale neighborhood, town, andcity
plans.I alsohadthe opportunity to collaborate with distinguished planners and architects onthe
publication ofanurbandesigntextbook.I contributed research,text,drawingsandphotographs
tothebook,andtheexperiencestrengthenedmyunderstandingofplacemaking.However,a
large portion ofmytownand city planning knowledge comesfrom living in(and traveling to),
great cities around the world.
I grewupin rural NewHampshire,eventuallywentawaytocollege,andsoonafterhadthe
chance tostudy abroad forseven months inBarcelona,Spain. While I hadbeenstudying
architecture andurbandesignat university, the education I received walkingalongavenueslike
La Ramblas andGranViade les CortsCatalanesonadailybasis made me better understand
theessential components thatcompriseanygreat neighborhood or city.Likemanyothers,I
continuedtotravelandeventuallylandedinSouthMiami,aboutsixyearsago.
When I came toMiamiforthe first time,I waslookingforaplacetolive.I wandered through
each neighborhood,lookingforan apartment thatwaswalkingdistancetoshops,restaurants
and many otherdaily esseniials.I useabicycleasmyprimary mode of transportation,so when I
first sawDorn Avenue and SunsetDrive,I instantlyrealizedthat I wanted tolive here.South
Miamihasadistinctand walkable neighborhood character—and itisagreatplacetolive.
I'dreallyliketo be apart of planning fortheCity'sfuture.
