Menendez City Clerk CITY COMMISSION MINUTES January 17, 2017 8 Approved Philip K. Stoddard Mayor THE CITY OF PI.EASAi'1T LIVING To: FROM: DATE: SUBJECT: CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER MEMORANDUM The Honorable Mayor & Members of the City Commission Steven Alexander January 3, 2017 Managers Report The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax help to people who generally make $54,000 or less, persons with disabilities and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers will provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals. Beginning in February we will offer the program every Tuesday from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Gibson- Bethel Community Center. Recently a South Florida city was apparently hacked and an unauthorized debit account was established and subsequently discovered a routine reconciliation. Mr. Riverol and our bank continue making improvements to our system in their ongoing review to tighten all of our protocols to ensure this does not happen to us. Many of you have received comments relative to a mahogany tree and the progress of a drainage project. Our two new experts Mr. Munoz and Mr. Carmenates, have reviewed the situation and believe that we need to revise the plans to create a new location for the inlet to prevent significant damage to the trees root system. By all accounts the Downtown Workshop was a success and hopefully signals a new period in the City's life where the City Commission recognizes the dramatic impact, both financial and socially on its residents and where the business community is not feeling like they are wasting their time by trying to approach City Commissioners with issues that they believe are important to preserving the ecosystem which is the downtown shopping area.
