A Resolution of the Mayor and City Commission naming February 2017 as
"Black History Month" in the City of South Miami.

WHEREAS, Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by black
Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of African Americans in U.S. history; and
WHEREAS, in 1926, historian and author Carter G. Woodson, who is known as the father of
Black History study, introduced Negro History Week during the month of February to have it as
close as possible to the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln, to highlight the role
blacks have played in the development of civilization and
WHEREAS, throughout the history of this community, the City of South Miami has been
characterized and strengthened by its diverse and distinctive cultures; and
WHEREAS, from incorporation, residents of African descent have made significant
contributions to the development and betterment of the City; and
WHEREAS, recognition of Black History Month remains important, as we reflect on the
sacrifices made by generations of African Americans.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA, THAT:
Section 1. The City Commission wishes to name the month of February 2017 as Black History
Month in the City of South Miami.
Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption.
