very open and transparent process and increase competition; he would like to have a process
that is similar to that of the City of Miami. He added that the City of Miami is having a
referendum in order to make sure what the citizens want. He also said that he would like to
scale back a portion of the sea level rise issue project since it could be possible to obtain future
funding from the state.

CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI
OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER
MEMORANDUM
The Honorable Mayor & Members of the City Commission
Steven Alexander
January 3,2017
Managers Report
Many families and individuals who reside in South Miami will benefit greatly from
free tax return assistance. Many may not know how to complete their taxes on
their own and/or do not have the resources to pay someone to do their tax return
for them. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax
help to people who generally make $54,000 or less, persons with disabilities and
limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax
returns. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation
with electronic filing to qualified individuals. Beginning in February we will offer
the program every Tuesday from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Gibson-Bethel
Community Center.
A person, who wished to remain anonymous, donated an undisclosed amount of
money in American Express gift cards, in ($100.00) one hundred dollar increments
to the Coral Gables Police Department program called "Secret Santa". The
anonymous person requested that these gift cards be distributed by Law
Enforcement personnel to individuals in need, whom they come across during
their tour of duty and stipulated that the issuing of these gift cards must be
completed by Monday -December 26 th .
Coral Gables Police Chief Ed Hudak contacted Chief Landa and advised
him of the initiative. Chief Hudak asked Chief Landa if the South Miami Police
Department would join them in the allocation of these funds to persons in need
within South Miami's jurisdiction. ($5,OOO.00) five thousand dollars worth of
American Express gift cards were set aside for South Miami's distribution, which
was a huge success.
THE CITY OF PI.EASANT UVING
CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI
OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER
MEMORANDUM
We wish to publicly recognize and thank Coral Gables Police Chief Ed Hudak who
unnecessarily shared this good will with the City of South Miami.
Recently a South Florida city was apparently hacked and an unauthorized debit
account was established and subsequently discovered a routine reconciliation. I
have asked Mr Riverol and our bank to review and tighten all of our protocols to
ensure this does not happen to us.
Since Ricardo Ayala resigned we have had a vacancy in our Project Manager
position in Public Works. Although we made a selection to fill this critical position
last year, he had some responsibilities to his former employer that had to be met
prior to his departure. We are very proud to present tonight Mr. Aurelio
Carmenates who is a Professional Engineer and who is enjoying his first day with
us today. He .has twenty five (25) years of experience performing engineering
design and inspection, project management, and construction administration of
major transportation project, building and structures, sanitary, water main,
drainage, streetscape, lightning and signalization, landscape underground utility
conversations, scheduling and analysis, constructability reviews, public
involvement, inter-agency coordination and quality assurance and quality control
of major clients such as MIA, FDOT, Port of Miami, MDX, Florida's Turnpike, City
of Miami, Hialeah and the City of Miami Beach. Please join me in welcoming him
to South Miami.
