RESOLUTION NO.29-97-10000 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA.AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO DISBURSE THE SUM OF $55,045.00 TO MCLAIN SOUTHLAND EQUIPMENT FOR THE PURCHASE OF A MECHANICAL STREETSWEEPER TRUCK FOR THE PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT AND CHARGING THE DISBURSEMENT TO ACCOUNT NO.1730-6430, "STREETS DIVISION -EQUIPMENT -OPERATING". WHEREAS,the streetsweeper currently usedbythe Public Works Department is almost nineyearsold,and; WHEREAS,duetothe nature of the work involved,the useful life of these machines is typically seventoeight years,and; WHEREAS,duetoitsage,the maintenance and repair costs associated withthe current streetsweeper has become excessive,and; WHEREAS,the effectiveness of the City's street sweeping operation requires consistent scheduling and proper equipment,and; WHEREAS,fundingforthe purchase of a mechanical streetsweeper is provided forinthe approved budget forthe current fiscalyear. The sweeper vehicle is used five days a week (including Saturdays)inthe early morning hours.Given.this amount andtypeof work,the useful life ofthistypeof vehicle is between seven and nine years.The machine used by Public Works is approaching nine years of age.The Tymco 200 model recommended for replacement isa state-of-the-art, compactsweeperusedinmanyoperationsacrossthecountry,including Memphis,San Francisco,and Atlanta. Presently,theCityofNaplesAirport Authority andtheCity of Miami Beachareboth using these machines effectively.Representatives from these operations are very satisfied with the equipment's performance.In Miami Beach,Tymco 200s perform the challenging taskof cleaning South Beach streetseach morning.Theterrainandlitter conditions posed bythebeach resembles our cleaning operationinthedowntownarea. Thepricequote obtained is from CityofNaples'August,1995 bid.Theirbidwas slightly lowerthanourscostduetothe inclusion of several optionsaddedtoour machine at additional cost.Theseincludearightsidegutterbroomandan additional watertankto allowforlongersweepingruns. Thestreet sweeping operationimpacts highly onthecity'simageand quality of life.Itis thereforeimportantthatthe availability and effectiveness of thesweeper vehicle is maximized.Forthis reason,I recommend thatthe$55,045.00purchasebeapprovedby the Mayor andCity Commission.
