ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA,
AMENDING CHAPTER 16A OF THE CODE OF ORDINAPTCL`,'_;.
CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA, BY ADDING THERB20
SECTION 16A-17A TO PROVIDE FOR THE POSITION OF
HONORARY CORPORAL OF POLICE AFTER 15 YEARS; OF
SERVICE AS A POLICE OFFICER WITH THE CITY;
PROVIDING FOR METHOD OF AWARD; EXPRESSING
INTENT THAT ORDINANCE BE INCLUDED IN CODE;
PROVIDING FOR SALARY INCREASE AND PROVIDING
EFFECTIVE DATE
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section 1. That Chapter 16A of the Code of Ordinances,
City of South Miami, Florida, be and the same hereby is amended
by adding thereto Section 16A-17A to read as follows:
"Sec. 16A-17A Position of Honorary Corporal of Police:
There ishereby ;established the position. of Honorary
Corporal of Police. Such position shall .beawarded
solely as a longevity benefit to police officers who
have completed 15 years of above average meritorious.
service with the police department of the City, but
who have not attained the rank of Honorary Corporal.
Such position shall not be considered an increase in
rank, nor shall officers who are awarded the position
have any additional authority within the department.
Officers awarded the position of Honorary Corporal shall
be entitled to wear on their police uniform sleeves a
patch or emblem consisting of two corporal stripes with
the letter "H" immediately below such stripes, the form
of such emblem to be approved by the City Manager.
Police officers who have served 15 years with the
Police Department of the City, who have not attained any
rank, may make application by letter to the City Manager
for award of the position of Honorary Corporal, The City
Manager shall thereupon refer the application to the Ad-
visory Personnel.: Hoard of the City whose members shall
promptly review the personnel record of the applicant,
and if they deem it advisable, conduct an interview with
the applicant. The Hoard shall make its recommendations
in wr tlhg to the City Manager within 10 days from the
date the application is filed with the City Manager.
Upon receipt of written reeo=endationf, of the Huard,
or upon the exp1rbLt1un of 30 days frOM eeeeipt of
the application, if recommendations are not.

shall review the recommendations of the Board
if received, and make such further inquiry as
he deems necessary to fully inform himself of
the record and qualifications of the applicant
to ascertain the extent and quality of the
applicant's service to the department. Within
30 days after receipt of the recommendations
from the Board, or if such recommendations are
not received within such period, then within 60 days
after the receipt of the application, the City
Manager shall either approve the application and
award the applicant the position of Honorary
Corporal, or disapprove the application In the
event of approval of the application, the applicant
shall be entitled to pay as Honorary Corporal
retroactive to the date of filing his application
with the City Manager. In the event of disapproval
of the application, the applicant may not file a
further application for a period of one year follow-
ing the date of filing of any disapproved application.
Officers awarded the position of Honorary Corporal
shall be entitled to a one-half step pay increase."
Section 2. It is intended that this Ordinance be
permanent in nature and included in the Code of Ordinances,
City of South Miami, Florida.
Section 3. This ordinance shall take effect
March 21. 1972.
