AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI,
FLORIDA, AMENDING SECTION 6 -1 -1, 6 -2 -1,
6- ,2 -10, 6 -3 -2 6 -3 -6, 6 -3 -7, 6 -3 -8, AND
6 -3 -9 OF ARTICLE I OF SECTION 1 OF
ORDINANCE NO. 20 -71- 724, HERETOFORE
ADOPTED AS THE OFFICIAL ZONING ORDINANCE
OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA, BY
CHANGING AND ADDING ADDITIONAL SIGN
DEFINITIONS, DELETING WORDS AND CERTAIN
PROVISIONS FOR PERMITS REQUIRED, DELETING
WORDS FROM THE DEFINITION OF POLITICAL
SIGN, CHANGING VIOLATION TIME FOR REMOVAL
OF SIGNS, CHANGING FLAT SIGN DEFINITION
FOR CLUSTER OR TOWNHOUSE /DUPLEX RESIDENTIAL
ZONES, ADDING NEW REGULATIONS FOR NEIGHBORHOOD
COMMERCIAL ZONES, DOWNTOWN COMMERCIAL ZONES,
ARTERIAL COMMERCIAL ZONES, AND BY CHANGING
FLAT SIGN DEFINITIONS FOR ARTERIAL COMMERCIAL
ZONES AND INTENSIVE ZONES, AND PROVIDING WHEN
THIS ORDINANCE SHALL TAKE EFFECT.
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI,, FLORIDA':
Section 1. That Section 6 -1 - -1 of Article I of
Section l of Ordinance No., 20 -71 -724, heretofore adopted as
the Official Zoning Ordinance of the City of South Miami,
Florida, be, and the same is hereby amended by adding the
following new subsections:
".20 Temporary Sign.
A sign permitted pursuant to Section 6 -2 -2
for not more than thirty (30) days."
".>21 Awning Sign.
Any sign painted, stamped, perforated,, or
stitched on the surface area of an awning,
canopy, roller curtain or umbrella."
11.22 Window or Door Identification Sign,.
A sign with any display of characters, letters,
illustrations or ornamentations on a- window or
door."
". 23 Name Plabo Sign.
A sign identifying the owner or occupant."
".24 Project-Sign.
A sign identifying the contractors owners and
purpose of project.,,
Section 2. That Sections ''6 -1 -1.11 and 6 -1 -1.12
of Article I of Section l of Ordinance No. '20 -71 -724, heretofore
adopted as the Official Zoning Ordinance of the City of South
Miami, Florida, be and the same are hereby amended to read
as follows
"6-1-1.11 I'l'luminated Sign-
Any sign which gives forth artificial light or is
designed to reflect light from one or more
sources; of artificial light erected for the
purpose of providing light for the sign_"
".12 Indirectly Illuminated Sign.
A sign which does not produce artifical light
from within itself, but which is either opaque and
backlighted or illuminated by spotlights or flood-
lights, not a part of or attached to, the sign
itself."
Section 3. That Sections 6 -2 -1.01 and 6 -2 -1.05
of Article I of Section 1 of Ordinance No. 20 -71 -724, heretofore
adopted as the Official Zoning Ordinance of the City of South
Miami, Florida, be, and the same are hereby amended to read as
follows:
"6 -2 -1 Permits Required.
.01 No sign, unless herein excepted, shall be
erected, constructed, posted, painted, altered, or
relocated, except as provided in this Article and
these regulations, until a permit has been issued by
the City Manager."
11•05 Each sign requiring a permit shall be
clearly marked with the permit number."
Section 4. That Section 6 -2 -10.02 of Article: I
of Section 1 of Ordinance No. 20 -71 -724, heretofore adopted
as the Official Zoning Ordinance of the City of South Miami,
Florida, be and the same is hereby amended to read as follows:
116 -2 -10 Removal
.02 The City Manager shall remove, or cause to be
removed, any sign erected or maintained in conflict
with these regulations if the owner or lessee of
either the site or the sign fails to correct the
violation within three (3) days after receiving
written notice of violation from the above official.
Removal of a .sign by the Building Official shall not
affect any proceedings instituted prior to removal of
such sign."
Section 5. That Section 6- 3-2.06 of Article I
of Section l of Ordinance No. 20 -71- X724, heretofore adopted as
the Official gonihq Ordinance of the City of South Miami,
Florida be, and the same is hereby amended to read as follows:
"6 -3 -2.06 One flat sign, not to exceed twenty
(20) square feet in area, for churches, temples,
synagogues and private schools. In addition,
churches, temples and synagogues shall be allowed
one detached bulletin board not to exceed ten (10;)
square feet in area and located not less than fifteen
(15) feet from a public right -of -way. Indirect
illumination only."
Section 6. That Section '6 -3 -6 of Article I
of Section 1 of Ordinance,No. 20 -71- 72`4, heretofore adopted as the
-Official Zoning Ordinance of the City of South Miami, Florida,
be., and the same is hereby amended by adding the following new
subsection:
"i6 -3 -6.07 One permanent identification, window
or door sign, (one or the other, not both) which,
if it exceeds one (1) square foot in area shall
not be ;permitted, unless approved by the Environmental
Review Board. The square footage of said sign shall not
be deducted from the flat sign area square footage
permitted in this zoning district."
Section 7. That Section 6 -3 -7.08 of Article I
of Section 1 of Ordinance No. 20 -71 -724, heretofore adopted as
the Official Zoning Ordinance of the City of South Miami,
Florida, be, and the same is hereby amended by adding the
following new subsection:
"6 -3 -7.08 One permanent identification, window
or door sign, (one or the other, not both) which,
if it exceeds one (1) square foot in area shall
not be permitted, unless approved by the Environmental
Review Board. The square footage of said sign shall not
be deducted from the flat sign area square footage
permitted in this zoning district."
Section 8. That Section 6 -3 -8.08 of Article I
Of Section 1 of Ordinance No. 20 -71 -724, heretofore adopted as
the Official Zoning Ordinance of the City of South Miami,
Florida; be, and the same is hereby amended by adding the
following new subsections
116 -3 -8.08 one permanent identification window
or door sign, (one or the other, not both) which,
if it exceeds one (1) square foot in area shall
not be permitted, unless approved by the Environmental
Review Board. The square footage ref said sign shall not
be deducted from the fiat sign area square footage
Permitted in this zoning district."
Section 9. That Section 6 -3 -7;01 of Article I
of Section l of Ordinance No'. 20 -71 -724, heretofore adopted
as the 'Official Zoning Ordinance of the City of South 'Miami,
Florida, be, and the same is hereby amended to read as follows:
"6 -3 -7.01 Flat signs with a. total aggregate
sign area not to exceed ten (10) square feet in area
for every ten (10) feet of linear lot frontage
Corner lots shall be permitted one additional flat
sign on the wall facing the side street. The area
of said sign shall •.ot exceed fifth (50 perc'ont
of the permitted area of the front flat sign.
Direct illumination only."
Section 10. That Section 6 -3 -8.01 of Article I
of Section l of Ordinance No. 20 -71 -724, heretofore adopted
as the Official Zoning Ordinance of the City of South Miami,
Florida, be, and the same is hereby amended to read as follows:
"6 -3 -8.01 Flat signs with a total aggregate sign
area not to exceed fifteen (1,5) square feet in
area for every ten (10) feet of linear lot
frontage and with no sign to exceed one hundred and
fifty (150) square feet in area. Corner lots shall
be permitted one additional flat sign on the wall .
facing the side street. The area of said sign shall
not exceed fifty (50) percent of the permitted area
of the front flat sign. Direct illumination only.'"
Section 11. That Section 6 -3 -9.02 of Article l
of Section l of Ordinance No. 20 - -71 -724, heretofore adopted
as the Official Zoning Ordinance of the City of South Miami,
Florida, be, and the same is hereby amended to read as ;follows:
"6 -3 -9.02 One flat sign, not to exceed one hundred
(100) square feet in area. Corner lots shall be
permitted one additional flat sign on the wall
facing the side street. The area of said sign
shall not exceed fifty (50) percent of the permitted
area of the front flat sign. Direct illumination only."
Section 12. This Ordinance shall take effect
immediately at the time of its passage.
