Saturday October 1, 2016, 2:00 pm -5:30 pm
Saturday, January 28,2017,2:00 pm -5:30 pm.
The City of South Miami will host two public meetings moderated by FIU professors
to invite the local community to discuss alternative responses to the challenges of
climate change and sea level rise.
The events will be a public conversations in which participants discuss alternative
approaches the City may take in responding to climate change and sea level rise.
Discussions will be informed by issue guides that layout challenges the community
will likely face in the next 30 years, and frame clear decisions that communities will
have to make in planning for the future. The second discussion will develop ideas
established in the first.
Following an introductory presentation by the FIU Sea Level Solutions Center, the
event will include two sessions, each one-hour long with a break in between. In
each session participants in small groups of 6-8 will discuss questions framed by the
. issue guides. Each group will elect a spokesperson. An FIU student volunteer will
take notes on salient points. At the end of the discussion, the spokesperson from
each of the small groups will report their findings to the entire group. Moderators
will summarize the main points of the discussion.
Following each event, moderators will write a report, which will be circulated to all
participants for comments, then submitted to the South Miami City Commission.
The report will summarize the range of opinions and concerns raised by
participants to establish a base for on-going civic discussions.
Organization and moderation of this community workshop will be provided as a
community service of Florida International University at no cost to the City of South
Miami.
