Res No 120-16-14675and and RESOLUTION NO.120-16-14675 A Resolution accepting the offer by FIU faculty to conduct a Community Conversation on Climate Change and Sea Level Rise in the City of South Miami. WHEREAS,ClimatechangeandsealevelrisearealreadyaffectingcommunitiesinSouthFlorida; WHEREAS,SouthMiamihaslow-lyingareasthatwillbeaffectedassealevelscontinuetorise; WHEREAS,citizens of South Miami are interested in engaging the challenges posed by climate change andsealevelrise;and WHEREAS,facultyat Florida International University haveoffered,atnocosttotheCity,to conduct a well-organized community discussion onclimatechangeandsea-levelrisewithourcitizenryon how theCity might address the coming challenges;and WHEREAS,theCity Commission wishestoacceptthisofferandhostthe Community Conversation on Sea Level Rise for the benefit of our residents. NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI,FLORIDA,THAT: Section 1.TheCity Commission hereby accepts theoffer posed bytheFIUSeaLevel Solutions Center to conduct a Community Conversation on Climate Change andSea Level Rise,on Saturday,October 1,2016,and on Saturday January 28,2017 forthe benefit of South Miami residents and theCity Commission as detailed inthe accompanying memo,andwill provide spaceforthis workshop at no cost if requested. Section 2.If any section clause,sentence,or phrase of this resolution isforany reason held invalidor unconstitutional bya court of competent jurisdiction,the holding shallnotaffectthe validity of the remaining portions of this resolution. TheCityof South Miamiwill host two public meetings moderated byFIU professors to invite the local community to discuss alternative responses to the challenges of climate change and sea level rise. The events willbea public conversations inwhich participants discuss alternative approaches theCitymay take in responding toclimatechangeandsealevelrise. Discussions willbe informed by issue guides that lay out challenges the community will likely facein the next 30 years,and frame clear decisions that communities will have to make in planning for the future.The second discussion will develop ideas established in the first. Following an introductory presentation by the FIU SeaLevel Solutions Center,the event will include two sessions,each one-hour long with a break in between.In each session participants in small groups of6-8will discuss questions framed by the .issue guides.Each group will elect a spokesperson.AnFIU student volunteer will take notes on salient points.At the end of the discussion,the spokesperson from each of the small groups will report their findings to the entire group.Moderators will summarize the main points of the discussion. Following each event,moderators will write a report,which willbe circulated toall participants for comments,then submitted to the South MiamiCity Commission. The report will summarize therangeof opinions and concerns raised by participants to establish a base for on-going civic discussions. Organization and moderation of this community workshop willbe provided asa community service of Florida International University at no cost to the Cityof South Miami.
