r ^,0 CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI INTER-OFFICE MEMORANDUM To:City Commission Date:July 22,2008 Via:W.Ajibola Balogun O^rNfe^"From:Cesar Garcia,Director City Manager Parks 85 Recreation Department 2Q>)Re:City of South Miami Aquatic Center -Update Update No.1:Aquatic Complex Design To provide update on the progress of Aquatic Complex and funding assistance offered by the Alliance for Youth. Action Taken: Since receiving the Miami-Dade County Officeof Community &Economic Development's (OCED)environmental clearance for the design of our Aquatic Complex,we have begun soliciting information from a group of municipal pools and water playgrounds in Palm Beach,Broward,Dade, and Monroe Counties.See Exhibit "A".The attached spreadsheet (working copy)shows the pools to which we are comparing our potential project and the costs associated with construction and operation of the sites. In comparing the projects listed in Exhibit "A",we noticed a glaring consistency that two companies have designed and/or built a large majority of them.Attached are examples of both of the companies'previous projects -See Exhibit "C".Also attached herein, please find a copy-of the operating costs of three of the Aquatic Facilities that we are comparing our project to.See Exhibit "D". Our proposed Aquatic Complex remains consistent with Option (1)of the Murray Park Master Plan Update that the Commission approved in 2004 which includes an 8-lane competitive pool and the relocation of the two outdoor basketball courts.See Exhibit "B". The only glaring addition to the current project involves a highly solicited water playground to be located in the area vacated by the basketball courts. Our next step is to select the company which will provide the design of our aquatic complex with the allocated OCED grant funds, with the intent to complete the design by December,2008.In addition, the Alliance for Youth has offered to assist the City with fundraising for the construction of the aquatic complex and to solicit an endowment that will cover the full or partial operating costs for the life of the pool.According to the Alliance for Youth's representative (Mr.Dick Ward),they intend to create a foundation that would perform the fundraising functions.Asa result, the Alliance for Youth is requesting for a formal acceptance of their fundraising assistance. Should you need additional information onanyof the items above, please do not hesitate to contact us. 1 «a *>•>Exhibit "A Pool Project (Aquatic Facilities) City/Town Size of Pool Year Construction Completed Amount Annual Open Cost Special Features 1 CoralSpringsAquatic Ctr. 25 meters x 25 yard 1995 $738,776.00 $700,000 Stainless steel system 2 CoralSpringsTeaching Pool 5/03 $326,462.87 $300,000 "soft walk"flooring 3 Plantation Aquatic Complex. 50 meters x 25 yards 10/97 $1,301,774.00 Splash deck,Stainless Steel system, gutter and wall panels with a hard PVC surface 4 Pompano Beach Aquatic Facility 50 meters x 25 yards 10/06 $655,024.00 Geothermal pool heating and cooling, decking,2(1)meter diving boards, electronic ADA lift,15 year warranty 5 Mitchell Moore Pool- Pompano Beach 30'x75'03/08 $1,440,000.00 9lanecourse,2(1)meterdiving boards, oversized step, 6 St.Lucie County Lakewood Park 75 yards x75 yards 06/07 $7,853,857.00 SplashDeck 7 Bucky Dent Aquatic Center 2003 2waterslides,lappool,totactivity jpool 8 Miramar Aquatic Complex 25 yards x25 meters 3/02 $1,254,218.00 8lanes,1meterdeep,stainless steel, play pool 9 Driftwood Park Aquatic Facility-Miramar 1/04 $1,050,000.00 10 Flamingo Park Aquatic Center Main poolhas4 lanes open forlap swimming, splash deck, 11 Larry and Penny Thompson Park 1974 3 waterslides 12 McDonald Aquatic Center Wavepool,lazy-river ride, tot pool 13 Wellington Aquatic Complex 50 meteres 9/99 $1,280,728.00 14 Milander Aquatic Center 25ft x 50ft 2 water slides, tot pool, activity c c c pool, 15 Normandy Isle Mushroom slides, activitypool, mainpool, splashdeck 16 Splash 'N'Playat Pinecrest Gardens 2006 $350,000.00 Splashdecksonly 17 Thomas Sassa Pool and Water Playground Mainpool, totpool,, 18 Grapeland Heights- Miami 5/08 $33,109,063.00 Has4differentpoolsincludinga river 19 Venetian Pool 850,000 gallons 1924 Waterfalls, 20 CalypsoCove Water Park 2005 3 pools:plunge pool,zero-depth jpooL six lane lap pool.Water slide 21 Castaway IslandatT-Y Park 2 splash pads,6 water slides, 22 Croissant Park Pool Splashdeck,2 slides 23 Cypress Park Pool Clover-shaped,84degreesyear round, water slides 24 Manatee Spray Playground at West Lake Park Splashdeck, 25 Markham Park Safari Island 3to12feetdeep,waterfall 26 Paradise Cove at C.B Smith Park Splash deck,12-inch deep pool w/ 2waterslides,18-inch deeppool w/3 waterslides-83ft,98ft,125ft 27 Pembroke Falls Aquatic Complex (2)140ftwater slides, multipurpose poolw/0-depth beach entry,8 lane lappool,13ft deep,(2)1 meter diving boards, splash deck 28 Plantation Central Park Pool 50 meters,25 yards 2Olympicsize pools, splashdeck 29 Splash Adventure at Quiet Waters Park Splashdeck, C^%_^C- 30 Sunrise Civic Center Aquatic Complex Olympic size pool, children's pool, 31 Tropical splash atCentral Broward Reqional Park 2splashdecks, 32 CalypsoBayinSeminole Pines Park 850,000 gallons Lilly-pad walk,759ft river ride,2 four story-high water slides, splash pad, lappool, divingboards 33 Coconut Cove at South County Regional Park 5-acrewaterparkw/1,000ftriver ride,2waterslides,splashdeck 34 Safari Splash atLion Country Safari 23waterplaystations, 35 Interactive Fountain at Palm Beach Zoo 36 Jacobs Acquatic Center - Key Largo 25MX25Yds 2002 2,500,000 Pool, diving, waterpolo, learnto swim (w/ramp),water playground. c %^y L Exhibit "B" ^^^^^mm^^ k J*;/ SW66TH STREET ~~^T RESIDENCES RE5IDDNCES '^(^^^te^^dx^X^bt^)-D<^0ooexz)oo00a3O00 LANDSCAPE -3.S5D SF nn LJ LJ NORTH 00 o south •^n <D I S £)"0"~0~"O~"0"~0"~0 O Ci)0raT 1 ©oQ I 1 0O i 1 I ZONED PI?
