_add-on d)Add-on Item d) Sponsored by: Vice Mayor Welsh City Commission Meeting: 5-03-16 Page 1 of 2 RESOLUTION NO. ________________ 1 2 A Resolution asking Miami-Dade County to require any 3 establishment that sells any kind of fishing tackle to display 4 warnings signs about proper use and disposal of fishing line, 5 hooks, and sinkers to prevent needless deaths of seabirds in a very 6 prominent place 7 8 WHEREAS, there presently exists no requirement to require any 9 establishment that sells any kind of fishing tackle to display, in a very prominent 10 place, warnings signs of at least 16” x 16" about proper use and disposal of fishing 11 line, hooks, and sinkers to prevent needless deaths of seabirds; and 12 13 WHEREAS, because fishing line is thin and often clear, it is very difficult 14 for birds and animals to see and they can easily brush up against it and become 15 entangled in it; and 16 17 WHEREAS, once entangled, they may become injured, may drown, may 18 become strangled, or may starve to death; and 19 20 WHEREAS, seabirds naturally try to eat seafood; and 21 22 WHEREAS, bait to catch fish is manufactured to resemble seafood; and 23 24 WHEREAS, many animals ingest fishing line, hooks, or sinkers, when it is 25 disposed of with unused bait attached to it or around it; and 26 27 WHEREAS, improper disposal of fishing lures causes needless agonizing 28 deaths of seabirds; and 29 30 WHEREAS, Pelican Harbor Seabird Station (PHSS) is a qualified facility 31 that treats injured seabirds and other wildlife; and 32 33 WHEREAS, PHSS has a wealth of knowledge concerning how to properly 34 dispose of fishing line, hooks, and sinkers to reduce harm to animals and can help 35 create the warning signs. 36 37 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND 38 Add-on Item d) Sponsored by: Vice Mayor Welsh City Commission Meeting: 5-03-16 Page 2 of 2 CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA 1 THAT: 2 3 Section 1 10 .
