NFPA 101 Life Safety Code — 1994 (LSC) (supersedes SFBC Ch. 31)
Construction:

Exiting:
Covered mall requirements will facilitate emergency egress means. LSC
24 -4.4 permits public corridors to function as 'pedestrian ways" which
contribute no occupant load and allow 200 feet additional exit travel.
Pedestrian ways must provide 10 feet unobstructed width, separate
facing tenant spaces by at least 20 feet, have demising partitions
between tenants, lead to minimum 66 inch wide exits and have full
coverage sprinkler protection. The required smoke control is met by
the mall being open to the sky.
10 11
Travel distance to an exit or the pedestrian way is 200 feet from the
most remote point for mercantile and assembly occupancies plus 200
feet additional along the pedestrian way to an exit, is 200 feet from
the entrance doors of apartments and 300 feet in open parking
structures. Dead end travel distance is limited to 50 feet except as
limited to 20 feet for exterior ways of exit access and not allowed
for assembly corridors. Fire resistant separated exit passageways are
provided to reduce exit access travel distance and eliminate dead
ends.
Occupancy Load for mercantile tenants is 30 sq —ft per person on ground
floors and 60 sq —ft per person on upper floors. Theater auditorium
occupancy is based on seating capacity, plus waiting patrons of a
number approximating the capacity of two auditoriums. Restaurant
occupancy is based on an approximation of 70% dining (15 sq —ft per
person), 25% office or kitchen (100 sq —ft per person) and 5% rest
rooms and corridors as retail (30 sq —ft or 60 sq —ft per person).
Apartment occupancy is 200 sq —ft per person.
Arrangement for stores having public access from one side, a maximum
of one —third of occupancy may exit through rear exits. For assembly
occupancies, the main entrance must provide capacity for at least
fifty percent of occupancy load, and other exits provide at least
fifty percent. Single exits are permitted for a maximum 3000 sq —ft
stores (Class C) where travel distance does not exceed 100 feet in
fully sprinklered facilities.
Horizontal exiting is permitted to separate building areas provided that
bridges or two hour fire resistance barriers are used for separation and
that there is at least one standard type of exit (not another horizontal

exit) leading from it. The capacity of horizontal exits is limited to
not more than one —half the required exits or egress capacity of the Fourth Floor:
buildings. Total occupant load: 258 people
Mall exits in this life safety analysis are defined as those exits which
are accessible by occupants in the general mall areas.
Tenant exits in this life safety analysis are defined as those exits
which are accessible to only those occupants who are in specific tenant
spaces.
Unprotected Vertical Openings between two adjacent floors are permitted
in class A and class B mercantile occupancies having full coverage,
supervised automatic sprinkler protection.
Exit passageway enclosures may not contain openings which are used for
purposes other than providing access into the enclosure from normally
occupied spaces or for providing egress from the enclosure into the
exit discharge. No openings through the passageway enclosure walls are
permitted from storage rooms, closets, boiler rooms, eqiupment spaces,
utility rooms, electrical vaults, or similar spaces that are not normally
occupied.
