Res No 004-16-14559RESOLUTION NO.:004-16-14559 AResolution of the City of South Miami,Florida,in support of the MiamiTiger Beetleandencouraging both the Florida Fish andWildlifeConservation Commission as well as the United States Fish and Wildlife Service to designate the MiamiTiger Beetle asa threatened and endangered species. WHEREAS,the City Commission ofSouth Miami (the "City")recognize that oneofthe lasttractsofendangeredpine rockland ("Rockland")within Miami-Dade County islocatedalong S.W.152 Street andS.W.12 Avenue in unincorporated Miami-Dade County;and WHEREAS,Rocklandisagloballyimperiled habitat containing anarrayofplants, animals,and insects which are rare andexclusive to that habitat;and WHEREAS,preservation of the native Rockland,and the species forwhichitprovidesa home,isof great importance for the protection ofournative forest's uniqueand endangered environment;and WHEREAS,one of the rare inhabitants of the Rocklandis the MiamiTiger Beetle;and WHEREAS,the MiamiTiger Beetle was presumed extinct untila recent survey detected the species in the Rockland;and WHEREAS,on June 29,2015,the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission received a request to evaluate the status of the MiamiTiger Beetle forlistingasa state- designated threatened and endangered speciesfrom the Center of Biological Diversity and individuals;and WHEREAS,the U.S.Fish and Wildlife Service is undergoing a similar process,and has scheduled a January 13th Public Hearing at Miami Dade College Kendall Campus aspartof its' rulemaking process forits proposal to list the MiamiTiger Beetle under the U.S.Endangered Species Act;and WHEREAS,the Cityis concerned that the rare Miami Tiger Beetle will become extinct within Miami-Dade County and/or worldwide;and WHEREAS,the City Commission finds that this Resolution isin the best interest and welfare of the residents of the City. NOW,THEREFORE,BEIT RESOLVED BYTHE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OFTHE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI,FLORIDA: Section 1.That each of the above stated recitals is hereby adopted and confirmed. Page 1 of 2 Res.No.004-16-14559 Section2.The City Commission herebyexpressesits support for the inclusion of the Miami Tiger Beetleinthe Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission state-designated threatened and endangered species list. Section3.The City Commission herebyexpressesits support for the inclusion of the Miami TigerBeetlein the U.S.Fish and Wildlife Service threatened and endangered species listing under the U.S.Endangered Species Act. Section 4.TheCityClerkis hereby directed to transmit this resolution toFloridaFish and Wildlife Conservation Commissioners,Florida State Legislators representing the City,and all elected municipal officials in Miami-Dade County. Section 5.TheCityClerkis hereby directed to transmit this resolution to members of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service,our South Dade members of the United States Congress and United States Senate.
