_add-on a)Add-On Item a) Sponsored by: Mayor Stoddard City Commission Meeting: 1-05-16 Page 1 of 2 RESOLUTION NO.: ________________ 1 2 A Resolution of the City of South Miami, Florida, in support of the Miami Tiger 3 Beetle and encouraging both the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation 4 Commission as well as the United States Fish and Wildlife Service to designate 5 the Miami Tiger Beetle as a threatened species. 6 7 WHEREAS, the City Commission of South Miami (the “City”) recognize that one of the 8 last tracts of endangered pine rockland (“Rockland”) within Miami-Dade County is located along 9 S.W. 152 Street and S.W. 12 Avenue in unincorporated Miami-Dade County; and 10 11 WHEREAS, Rockland is a globally imperiled habitat containing an array of plants, 12 animals, and insects which are rare and exclusive to that habitat; and 13 14 WHEREAS, preservation of the native Rockland, and the species for which it provides a 15 home, is of great importance for the protection of our native forest’s unique and endangered 16 environment; and 17 18 WHEREAS, one of the rare inhabitants of the Rockland is the Miami Tiger Beetle; and 19 20 WHEREAS, the Miami Tiger Beetle was presumed extinct until a recent survey detected 21 the species in the Rockland; and 22 23 WHEREAS, on June 29, 2015, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission 24 received a request to evaluate the status of the Miami Tiger Beetle for listing as a state-25 designated threatened species from the Center of Biological Diversity and individuals; and 26 27 WHEREAS, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is undergoing a similar process, and has 28 scheduled a January 13th Public Hearing at Miami Dade College Kendall Campus as part of its’ 29 rule making process for its proposal to list the Miami Tiger Beetle under the U.S. Endangered 30 Species Act; and 31 32 WHEREAS, the City is concerned that the rare Miami Tiger Beetle will become extinct 33 within Miami-Dade County and/or worldwide; and 34 35 WHEREAS, the City Commission finds that this Resolution is in the best interest and 36 welfare of the residents of the City. 37 38 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE 39 CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA: 40 41 Section 1. The City Commission hereby expresses its support for the inclusion of the 1 Miami Tiger Beetle in the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission state-designated 2 threatened species list. 3 4 Section 3. The City Commission hereby expresses its support for the inclusion of the 5 Miami Tiger Beetle in the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service threatened species listing under the U.S. 6 Endangered Species Act. 7 8 Section 4. The City Clerk is hereby directed to transmit this resolution to Florida Fish 9 and Wildlife Conservation Commissioners, Florida State Legislators representing the City, and 10 all elected municipal officials in Miami-Dade County. 11 12 Section 5. The City Clerk is hereby directed to transmit this resolution to members of 13 the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, our South Dade members of the United States 14 Congress and United States Senate. 15 16 Section 6. Effective Date.
